Its snowing!!!! The goat skull in the snow felt like fallen armor, like finding a battle helmet in Game of Thrones. This piece was made specifically for my friend Shereen from , who very graciously allows me to work with the remains of her deceased animals.

When I work with gold leaf, it’s never just gold leaf. I dapple in soft bronzes, rose gold, gold so soft in tone it’s almost white, opaque gold enamel, translucent sparkly coppers- there’s so much more to a shiny surface than you might think. Then when I combine it with the planes of a skull shape the metal almost feels like it was there all along.

I’ve been reading a book on the history of magic. Not in an “eye of newt” way; in an historical way. Humans have been dabbling in shamanism & animism for thousands of years. It’s possible working with animal bones was the first form of artwork. Someone recently described these skulls as dark and beautiful, and I kind of cocked my head to the side and suddenly remembered the whole “death” thing. I don’t really think about death when I embellish the bones. I suppose I’m just following a many thousands of years old human impulse to hold a thing and change it.

This lucky girl got to visit and was just in awe of what taxidermy can look like. I wish I’d taken more pictures of everything, but especially the antique mounts. Carved wood, straw, lead- everything was so careful and perfect. A lot of reverence goes into preserving museum pieces!!! thank you for your patience and kindness in showing me and my kid around the studio. Y’all are in there concocting magic!

I found an old canvas on the sidewalk last week and ever since I’ve been trying a more formal object than usual! Still counts as upcycling when it’s a discarded painting, right? Turns out gilding cloth is just as straight forward as ceramic. The flowers and the bird are cut from an avian illustration book and a Redoute anthology. Lots of copper, pink, red and fuchsia tones, coated with a thick layer of acrylic sealant.

Friendsgiving gets an upgrade with a harvest orange & gold cocktail tray! This one is on the larger side; about 24” wide. The painted silverplate tray has been sealed in epoxy and can be gently hand washed. like a boss!

My favorite detail of this little buddy is the backside- keep a’swipin! I did a little fan of leaves with a smattering of gold leaf. Seriously, you can put gold leaf on anything. Just sprinkle some fake gold leaf all over my dead body when I kick the bucket. Instant glam.

You ever just walk around Home Depot and look at all the things? Don’t even get me started on the smell of the lumber area. I saw these ceramic switch plate covers and thought, you know what could use a smattering of gold leaf and color gilding? Those babies!!!! Dm me for purchase or other sizes 😘

A set of witch’s hat ring holders being created- I take a little copper wire, bend it into the buckle shape and hand hammer it. I learned this technique from my dad. He was an artist and once made me a teeny little bird’s nest out of hammered wire and carved a little bird to rest in the center. 🧙‍♀️ 💍

Today I played hooky with my kid and we pretended we were in a Nora Ephron film in the Upper West Side. No real plan, just a vague idea I needed coffee at some point.
We walked around Central Park for a while. I dreamily wondered aloud how many dead bodies had been found in The Ramble over the years. We “discovered” Belvedere Castle and Munchkin almost got her croissant stolen by a fat goose. I tried not to think about needing to p*e for two hours. Afterwards we got a chili dog at Gray’s Papaya and Munchkin dropped hers promptly on the ground. Gotta tell you, it was absolute magic and I feel refreshed and ready to make more stuff
