Intergenerational activities in the field of environment are vital! Not only for the climate but also for the young and elderly, who have many benefits to share.

Meet the Roots and Shoots toolkit for intergenerational gardening projects, a document based on a project led by Leicester Ageing Together in Leicester since 2015.

This helpful guide shows the benefits of intergenerational gardening projects for the young and elderly that both need companionship and to feel understood.

In that sense, having an intergenerational garden in the ward has numerous benefits, as it enables young and elderly people to learn new skills from each other and gives a sense of purpose as it reduces the isolation of the elderly and provides support for young people who do not have grandparents available for them.

To sum up, gardening is not only an ecological, economical and fun way to grow your own food and embellish green spaces, but it also is very beneficial to fulfil both young and elderly people.

Good news!

Almost all European cities are resorting to nature-based solutions to mitigate the impact of climate change.

A recent report by the European Environment Agency finds that 91% of local climate action plans include nature-based solutions. Indeed, those solutions present a multitude of co-benefits including biodiversity gains, recreation potential, and a positive mental well-being impact.

Climate action is beneficial for a large number of reasons, let’s continue to increase our involvement!

Climate justice beyond intergenerational conflict: Do we fully understand youth climate activism and their claims for climate justice?

“Climate justice” is an umbrella term that encompasses ethical principles for problems relating to inequalities caused by climate change (Shue 2014; Gardiner and Weisbach 2016; Gardiner 2017). For all its various definitions, the common denominator is disparities between responsibility for greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and the damage caused by global warming (Dietz and Garrelts 2014). The disparities are made manifest when seen through various lenses such as intergenerational inequality, historical responsibility, and critical climate justice.

Intergenerational justice was the initial ethical idea that gave rise to the paradigm of climate justice (Taylor 2000; Shue 2014). The well-known Brundtland report, “Our Common Future”, catalyzed the institutionalization of the concept by defining sustainable development as “development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs” (Brundtland 1987).

Have you heard of the Global Intergenerational Week (GIW)?

🤝The GIW is an annual, civil society-led campaign highlighting intergenerational practice's importance and benefits.

During the GIW, the potential role kids and seniors play as change agents and the connections across generations will be celebrated and recognized for their potential.

Similarly, the GaGEN initiative emphasizes the importance of intergenerational connections in addressing climate challenges. Using serious games in a digital format, GaGEN fosters an intergenerational learning approach to environmental education.

🌱Let's unite generations to create a sustainable future!

Images of Change: Climate change affects our world more and more every day.

In August 2020, part of the ice dam gave way and an estimated 132 billion gallons (500 billion liters) of water quickly drained out of the lake in an event known as a glacial lake outburst flood.

🌎 Youth lead the way to multi-stakeholder partnerships for climate education and action

"At UNESCO’s Partnerships Hub event held on 10 November 2023 in Paris, members of the SDG4 Youth & Student Network, a platform of the Global Cooperation Mechanism (GCM) representing millions of youth and student constituents, led the conversation on forging meaningful partnership between youth and the private sector for global efforts on climate action, justice and greening education."

The discussion culminates into three key takeaways elaborated by session moderator, Kenisha Arora:
1⃣ Current statistics are clear — the environmental crisis affects young people, especially those from marginalized communities.
2⃣ Education is needed to equip young people with skills and tools that will make them leaders in combatting and navigating through this climate crisis.
3⃣ Partnerships are integral in the success of climate action — we cannot achieve anything without multistakeholder and intergenerational partnerships.

Climate change global awareness is crucial for a sustainable future. As we embark on our Gagen project, a serious game dedicated to climate awareness, events like the recent Climate Change and Sustainability Week organised in Borneo provide valuable insights.

In June, the sustainability week organised showcased how serious games, such as Climate Fresk, can effectively raise awareness about climate change. Climate Fresk is a collaborative serious game based on 42 cards, where participants draw frescoes summarizing the work on climate change, its global challenges, and solutions, highlighting the power of interactive learning.

The 'Train the Facilitators' program that took place that week empowered 33 participants, including government representatives and youth advocates, to conduct the Climate Fresk game, amplifying its impact.

Gagen's mission aligns perfectly with these efforts. Let's continue to prioritize climate action and work together to protect our environment for future generations. 🌎🎮

Did you know that digital serious intergenerational games focus on education and not just entertainment by promoting interaction between different generations?

But how can we create such games? 🧐

Collaborative digital games that are short, chance-based with engaging themes and characters and that promote positive interdependence and facilitate social interaction between generations seem to be a step in the right direction!

Climate Change is Real?

🌎 While Earth’s climate has changed throughout its history, the current warming is happening at a rate not seen in the past 10,000 years.

📄 According to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), "Since systematic scientific assessments began in the 1970s, the influence of human activity on the warming of the climate system has evolved from theory to established fact."

📉 Scientific information taken from natural sources (such as ice cores, rocks, and tree rings) and from modern equipment (like satellites and instruments) all show the signs of a changing climate.

🛑 From global temperature rise to melting ice sheets, the evidence of a warming planet abounds.

How does climate change affect the health of older people?🧐

A new report from the World Health Organization (WHO) highlights the health impacts of climate change on older people, including increased mortality from heat waves, increased risk of vector-borne diseases, and psychological and social impacts. The report also highlights the importance of public policies that promote adaptation to climate change and the creation of healthy and sustainable environments for older people.

Climate change and population aging are happening together, and we need to address their impact on older adults urgently. However, older people are vulnerable to climate effects due to health conditions and social factors. They have been overlooked in climate studies, but they can be agents of change!

Games are not (only) for children: intergenerational games for people of all ages. 🎮

Games are important for the development of children and are also beneficial for older people. Intergenerational interaction can promote better health and social engagement, as well as learning opportunities.

By combining the concept of playful learning with intergenerational learning, it is possible to create spaces and activities that engage adults and children, providing enriching interactions and mutual benefits. These intergenerational games strengthen well-being, reduce social isolation, and create powerful community connections. This approach reinforces the importance of play throughout life and strengthens community resilience.

But… What the heck are serious games? 🧐🎮

Serious games are a genre that stands out for offering a narrative experience outside the context of conventional entertainment. These games are primarily intended to "gamify" the learning processes in a modern environment. They promote interaction and experiential learning, allowing players to develop a basic knowledge in various areas.

One of the main advantages of serious games is the promotion of critical thinking and the ability to solve problems quickly and effectively. In addition, serious games allow players to explore virtual environments where they can learn, choose, and decide in a realistic way.

Serious games offer an innovative and effective approach to education, using narrative and interactivity to promote learning. They encourage critical thinking, problem solving, and provide an engaging and adaptive learning experience.
