Is training too much and too hard and in a long period of time could cause overtraining? Yes, too much of any stress can harm you, training with weights or any other Gym resistance Equipment Machines without sufficient rest between workouts could lead to overtraining, when enough and sufficient rest is not taken into consideration overtraining can occur and hinder your muscle gains, Overtraining is like a snake bite ,once your body suffers overtraining all gains you have been working so hard to achieve might disappear like smoke on the air, Train smart and give your body sufficient rest, train four to five times per week, You can train three days on and one day off and two days on one day off, By doing this way your body will get quick recovery from one exercise routine to the next, or you might train two days on and one day off then two days on and two days off for quick muscle recovery , frequent workouts routines without sufficient rest will put your gains at a halt ,Be focused ,think more about how you can have proper gains after a good workout routine, Don't repeat training a body part which you train a day earlier, go train another opposite body part, repeat the other body part after 48 hours to 72 hours, by training this way your muscles will recover so quick, It's what you know that makes you grow, period!
