The Underground Metal Head
My aim to boost underground bands popularity by doing reviews, reccomendations and advertising gigs.
I also want to attempt interviews, yet this may have to be once all this Covid mess has blown over.
Hello all,
Just wanted to introduce myself and let everyone know whats going on.
My name is Tom Peppard and I've been attending underground gigs for only 3 years amd have been a metal head my whole life. The favourite genres are extreme metal and thrash.
At the moment reccomendations and reviews have dramatically slowed as I am working full time and have my solo music project going.
This page is currently non-profit as the dream is to promote the underground scene. However finding time to make these recommendations is hard.
So if you are in a band please feel free to post a link to your work on this page
Relentless Aggression
Relentless Aggression - A Shadow Of All Things Broken | BRUTALISM.com Relentless Aggression are a classic thrash metal band paying a great deal of homage to the old school era on "A Shadow Of All Things Broken".
Bloody $adism band
Bloody Sa**sm are a slamming brutal death metal grindcore technical death metal deathgrind band. Try saying that when pi**ed.
Covering multiple basses straight off the bat. Upon first listen you can hear that there is a definite love for horror behind the music. With fast-paced drums and extremely low guttural vocals. Bloody Sa**sm are a classic example of Goregrind/Slam metal. My favourite song off there Spotify is personally, "Ravenous W***e" as it includes all my favourite elements of gore metal. The low gutterals, speed filled drums and brutal guitar. Not only this but the vocals at certain points of the track are the classic goregrind pig squeal. Giving the music the sense that you are in a slaughterhouse about to get murdered by a vicious masked killer.
If you are a fan of the softer style of metal music then I strongly suggest not listening to Bloody Sa**sm as the name truly says it all you are in for some sadistic torture in the best possible way when you listen to the music.

See you in the pit - Tom P
Although hardly underground Alestorm have announced a UK and Ireland tour!
To any fans of pirate metal I strongly suggest going to watch them. Glory Hammer are also an insane band with radical songs.
If anyone goes to the Bristol event you may see me in person!
Possibly the biggest review I've ever done
The legendary Korpse - Insufferable Violence
Korpse - Insufferable Violence | BRUTALISM.com Korpse offer a distinctive sound in terms of slam metal leaning incredibly into the brutal aspect just by looking at the cover of "Insufferable Violence".
Yet another review I wrote on Brutalism
Heretic Warfare - Hell On Earth | BRUTALISM.com If you haven't already listened to Heretic Warfare "Hell On Earth", you better do it as soon as possible.
Mixed Psychosis
Mixed Psychosis are the first band I have reviewed that do not recognize themselves are any genre of metal specifically referring to themselves as scrap metal as they use influences from multiple different genres to form one.
Now as a reviewer I pick out positives and negatives depending on what the genre as every genre has different aspect. Mixed Psychosis is tonnes of different genres thrown together so it is a hard review to write.
Sometimes when people fuse genres together its for the better. Personally, I am not sure what to think about Mixed Psychosis. They are certainly distinctive. The current form of Mixed Psychosis has, been together for roughly a year however the group has been around for roughly 4 years.
I am interested in seeing what Mixed Psychosis have in mind for the future as I can see them becoming a supremely talented band as members have been classically trained so they certainly know their way around an instrument but, Mixed Psychosis still need some work. The mix on certain songs sounds out of time when listening giving it a disorientating feeling. The vocals also don’t match the atmosphere of the music.
One aspect you can tell when listening to Mixed Psychosis is that the group have put the flute ahead of all the other instruments creating it as the lead instrument which gives it an interesting feel to boost up the atmosphere, in areas the flute creates the group as a whole in other areas the flute can be seen as distracting and out of time with the rest of the mix. However, it is welcome to hear the different element behind the music giving Mixed Psychosis a unique feel.
The band feels as I it was built around the flute especially in areas as certain elements of the track get missed. If I were to put Mixed Psychosis into a genre, I would say they are folk metal due to the use of the woodwind instrument. It is a fun and unique idea.
Mixed Psychosis are still an extremely talented group and there are sections in many of their songs where you can hear this in terms of complex fills and a high-tech sound in areas. This can be heard in their EP, “Episode” where you can hear this amazing work in all its glory.
All in all, I would recommend Mixed Psychosis as I believe that they have all the skills that it takes to become something major.

KRUDE BAND
Thrash/groove demons of the Irish underground scene Krude are definitely a band to get behind. I have unfortunately not seen Krude live but I pray that they one day tour England.
The immediate response I had upon first listen is, “F**k that’d be a sick WWE Entrance song!” With the groove and demonic style of guitar alongside matching drum skill. Setting the mood for a never ending war.
My largest negative about Krude is the vocals don’t match the music as it seems that the vocals should be constant growls/screams essentially, I personally don’t feel that clean vocals match the brutality behind the instrumental work I feel that the vocals need a certain amount of distortion thrown in behind them.
That being said the catchy riffs and head banging drums are amazing and will make you beg for more after the first listen.
When talking about thrash metal we have to mention a new term which I call, “Moshability!” and this band are a definite good one to run into to your mates at full velocity to. With the build ups and gut punches in the music.
For more info about Krude check them out with the link below:
https://linktr.ee/KRUDEOFFICIALBAND
I know it's not necessarily underground however there are tonnes of kiler bands playing the Sophie Lancaster Stage whom I would consider underground.
And their will hopefully be the metal to the masses winners
If we were to make Underground Metalhead shirts who would be interested?
My Threnody
My Threnody are a doom metal band that were born in Angelical Grief, Boston in 1996 as a side project by Jefferson Britto who is the co-founder of Brazilian doom metal powerhouses Silent Cry.
Although personally I have never really been a large fan of doom metal, I can happily say that My Threnody truly blew me away with their distinctive sound and I can happily say that if you are a fan of doom metal that this is certainly a band to get behind.
One aspect of them that I absolutely love is the drumming work thrown in behind the tracks as it brings out the immense atmospheric feel in behind the tracks, giving it a fuller and more special feeling behind each and every one of the tracks. If you enjoy the deeper feeling doom metal, then get on behind this.
Another aspect that I enjoy of My Threnody is the vocal work, which adds that element of brutality in behind the already heavy doom. Giving the sense of an incoming fate. As if the band was showing us the constant build up then the vocals give us that element of horror.
To summarise although Doom metal isn’t my preferred genre I still highly enjoyed the music and would love for everyone whom reads the reviews to share this band amongst their friends who enjoy doom metal.

Ignited
Ignited are a heavy metal band from Brazil and they have been going strong since 2017. With heavy riffage backed by powerful drumming and topped off by high toned vocals.
Nowadays we do not have many classic heavy metal bands, with most bands performing sub-genres like thrash or death metal. So, it is awesome to hear some classic heavy metal, especially with that Brazilian flair giving it the definite uniqueness.
Ignited are an amazing band and I highly suggest checking out their discography, at the end of this review I will leave a link for their Spotify so you can hear more.
Recently in 2020 Ignited signed a deal with Voice Music and they stated, “Ignited have a captivating sound with a lot of weight and technique. Made for those who love the purest heavy metal!” It is sae to say that I completely agree. If I were to compare Ignited to any band, I can think of the first group that comes to mind is Iron Maiden, with the main difference being the heaviness thrown in behind it.
My personal favourite song in their entire discography at the time of this review is Ignition which has everything I look for in metal going from the heaviness thrown behind the drum work to the shred worthy riffs.
The vocals can unfortunately be grating after a good bit of time as it is quite high and irritating in places. However, if you are a fan of the clearer and higher style of singing then I strongly recommend getting behind Ignited.
Overall, I enjoy Ignited and look forward to seeing what they have in stock for the future. I would also enjoy it if they done a UK tour at some point in the future as they sound like they would be amazing in the live setting.

Servants To The Tide
Straight from Germany comes the epic doom powerhouses, Servants To The Tide. With an incredibly heavy feeling guitar style and groovy drums.
As you know from previous reviews that I have done I am not a fan of Doom Metal that being said epic doom is almost a completely different genre of music. It’s a good idea naming this band Servants To The Tide as the music feels as if you are on dangerous waters near to facing your eternal watery doom.
When listening to doom metal there are a couple main things that I look for, those being the drumming and guitar work, it is safe to say that Servants To The Tide offer skill in both of these areas. The brutality of the drumming including heavy hits and a slow grooved rhythm fronted with a distorted soulful guitar.
If you enjoy doom metal then I strongly suggest checking out the more epic side of doom and you should check out Servants To The Tide. With their distinctive take on the genre as a whole. I would love to see them live to see how they perform.

Deathmace
Deathmace are a death/thrash metal band from York UK. It is safe to say that there is a definite love for the old school era of death metal with this group. Going strong since 2009 Deathmace bought out a new single last year entitled Coffin Maggots and it is every bit as brutal as you’d want from your death metal.
Unfortunately, I haven’t seen Deathmace live however upon listening to them I genuinely would love to see a full UK tour from these powerhouses. I often talk about guitar and drum work behind albums and Deathmace certainly have that talent in the gallons but I have to mention the bass work done. Being a bassist I have a love for a good bassline and fu***ng hell Deathmace have some groovy bass riffs in their tracks.
The only negative I can see, however personally I enjoy it is the vocals. You can tell that Deathmace is a UK based band in some of their tracks as the vocals have that strong northern accent. I love it as it gives the band a great element of uniqueness as it’s not just your ordinary death metal band.
They also have that biscuit tin snare sound in many of their songs, which is a classic sound in death metal that I enjoy but I know some dislike.
All in al, Deathmace are and amazing death metal whom should be headlining festivals already. I look forward to seeing what Deathmace have in stock for the future.

Afghan Haze
Afghan Haze are a stoner metal group from Connecticut and they are trailblazing the genre in their own special way.
Although I’m not the best when it comes to reviewing the slower side of metal music being a fan of thrash and speed metal mainly I do have a love for the doom and stoner style of metal.
It is safe to say Afghan Haze have truly surprised me as one of the best in this style. Offering a much more chilled out melodic vibe to their music Afghan Haze are certainly a band to get high and chill out with your mates listening too. The guitar and drum work on the album is amazing keeping perfectly in time in order to give that feeling of falling. Then the vocals kick in. They are great offering us brutality in a pure form. Although I stated previously that I am much more a fan of speed in my music Afghan Haze is perfect for me to calm down with complexity and raw talent that they put behind there music.
Although this may sound cliché I highly suggest listening to Afghan Haze if you are a fan of bands like Sleep as they will not disappoint you in the slightest.

Internet’s Effect on Metal
Over the years the internet has had a major influence of music all together. This is due to the ease of access and bands being able to put out their music much easier. Without the internet this very page would not exist, and all reviews would be limited to magazines and on the back of albums.
Due to bands being able to get their music out their much easier new genres emerged and peoples versions of their own takes on classic genres. People also realized that thanks to the internet it is now much easier to make music.
One of my favourite internet genres to emerge thanks to the internet is cyber-grind. This genre emerged thanks to fans of grindcore realizing that they could create full albums by themselves. Even if they couldn’t play many if any instruments. They could always use a synth or an internet programme to sound like the instrument.
Cyber-grind is one of the reasons why the metal community will live on forever as people will use anything, they can get their hands on in order to create music.
Notable cyber-grind bands are:
• SpermSwamp
• Libido Airbag
• We Came With Broken Teeth
• Iamerror
Iamerror is a nintendocore group which is a genre I will love to write about in the future. He released song which is a perfect example of everything being done by one-man would-be Rainbow Road. This song can be considered the worst song ever made. I will leave a link to the song at the end of this article.
Excluding the evolution of a whole new genre lets talk about the biggest positive of the internet which is the ability to listen to metal music from all over the globe. I recently wrote reviews for bands in Netherlands, France, Canada, England and Czech Republic. So I am able to listen to these bands and find out about these bands thanks to the internet.
We most likely all enjoy using the platforms like Spotify which holds host to music from all over the globe. Even if you don’t you more than likely have a form of social media as the internet is near impossible to escape. We all love metal and it can be founded from all over the world.

See you in the pit – Tom P
Jordan Sartor
The first time I listened to Jordan the first word that popped into my head was, “Brutal!” offering us the shouting style of vocals alongside powerful guitar.
For a solo project this is possibly the best I have ever heard in terms of deathcore. Giving us a unique style with powerful brutalism behind the lyrics. Jordan is one of those people whom giving the proper tools could easily headline metal festivals across the globe.
From Collegeville Jordan is making huge steps into becoming a deathcore legend. The style in the music is unlike any genre I’ve heard previous.
Possibly my only negative is at the beginning of the debut single as the vocals are partly irritating however once you get past the, “ooh... Yeah... Bap bap bap!” you are in for a pleasant surprise.
In certain areas of the music you could hear influences from bands such as Slipknot with the electronic elements thrown in for good measure. Unfortunately as I’m UK based I most likely won’t see Jordan live for a while however I can imagine him putting on an amazing showcase and I look forward to seeing what he holds in the future

Dawn Of Ascension
Dawn Of Ascesion are a 5 piece metalcore group from South Arkansas. Offering a heavy style with powerful breakdowns in the music. Upon first listen you can tell that they take major influence from Parkway Drive.
One aspect that I just love about the group is the expert guitar work put behind each track. The guitarist should take his hat off as it is possibly some of the best guitar work I’ve heard since I started doing the underground reviews.
The drum work is also great offering heavy playing and in areas fast hitting. In the breakdowns Dawn Of Ascesion are incredible. I highly recommend them.
My only issue with them is that in certain areas of the songs the electronic element takes over to much which unfortunately distracts us the listener from the skillful instrument mastery. An odd dislike as well is in the song take it all away as the guitar solo just comes out of nowhere and doesn’t match the style of music at all. It is still an amazing solo but it’d sound better as a part of a classic rock number as appose to metalcore.
All in all I strongly suggest getting behind Dawn Of Accession if you are a fan of metalcore as the band may become one of your favorites instantly.

Katapult
Katapult are a modern thrash band from Gothenberg, Switzerland and Sweeden (I was surprised and yes, it is genuinely both) and as many of you who know me personally thrash metal is my favourite genre for its speed and insane guitar skill and I can happily say that Katapult has both of these.
Katapult’s unique style of thrash is something to keep an eye on. It must be mentioned that some of there songs have extreme groove elements making them perfect to dance to, the band have recently released their EP, “Shut the F**k Up and Press Play.” A title which many of us will think when we want to listen to some metal.
The vocal work put behind Katapult is immense with the classic screaming vocal style mixed incredibly well into all the tracks. Although personally I am not a huge fan of their entire catalogue a few songs stand out as insane, these songs are; A Fistful of Truth; All That’s Left; and Siege, Destroy, Annihilate.
My only issue with Katapult is that a majority of their songs sound the exact same offering little variety which isn’t necessarily a negative if you are a fan of the style however I can imagine it being a negative to most.
That being said though I can salute the mixing work done on Katapults discography as it is mixed perfectly. I can strongly see Katapult being recognized in the future as one of the leading bands in the modern thrash movement and I can’t wait for them to be able to do a world tour as they sound as if they would be a legendary band in the live setting.

Adam and the Hellcats – Claws Out
An ultimate classic rock band from Bristol Adam and the Hellcats are taking the UK underground scene by storm with unique style with groove tones.
Adam and The Hellcats have a whole new album coming out April 16th of this year. I have left a link at the end of this review so you can pre-order your copy. There will also be a Spotify pre-save link so you can hear the masterpiece as soon as it is out.
I have listened to the album many times now and can say that it is a classic in the rock’n’roll genre, with groovy guitar riffs and complex solos. This album also has many of trumpet sections which adds a great level of uniqueness to the product.
Kickstarting with a song entitled, “She’s a Vampire” which has an intense atmosphere behind and an incredibly catchy main riff. It is an incredibly fun song and a fantastic way to kickstart the album. This song is also a good sing a long as you will be singing the phrase blood sucking bitch for eternity.
We then go into my second favourite song off the album, “Queen and Country” which has awesome emotive solo which steals the whole song with its complexity alongside power. I also highly enjoy the female vocal sections as it was a welcome surprise by myself.
You will notice with a majority of the tracks off this album that they all have that bluesy feel behind them, with the old school style of rock’n’roll and I would recommend this album to fans of Status Quo as they certainly have that feel behind them.
My absolute favourite off of this album is, “Before The Bomb” If it was up to me I would have had this track open up the album as the sample of an explosion at the beginning sets the atmosphere perfectly. Getting you in the mood for some classic rock music.
Overall, I suggest pre-ordering this album using the link below if you want to be blown away. Adam and the Hellcats are fronting in my opinion the underground wave of classic rock music and you should get behind them and support to see what else they have in future.

Another Brutalism Review by myself this time the band Trapped In Purgatory check them out
Trapped In Purgatory - Damned Nation | BRUTALISM.com If you love the old school era of thrash metal then I highly suggest becoming a fan of Trapped In Purgatory with their "Damned Nation" album.
Oh! Behave are a 5-piece metalcore/electronica Lucena City, Philippines.
The very first thing I noticed when listening to Oh! Behave is their instantly brutality, offering little to no pauses Oh! Behave smack you in the face from beginning to end with their style. For some metalheads the use of synths may be a huge put off, I however believe that they add an awful lot to the band making them unique.
One thing to keep your ears on when it comes to a metalcore band is the drum work in my opinion as drums often carry most metalcore bands and the drumming in Oh! Behave is superb hardly stopping unless for a breakdown.
Talking about the breakdowns Oh! Behave have them in masses and the use of electronica ensures that these breakdown’s have that epic video game like feeling. As much as I love the electronics, I must admit at certain points of their tracks it doesn’t mix into well with the rest of the song and often comes out of nowhere which in some cases is great but in a majority is irritating in my opinion.
Though if you are a fan of metalcore then I would suggest listening to Oh! Behave due to their take on the genre they may just surprise you. I would be interested in seeing Oh! Behave in a live setting in the future at some point.
Malacoda
Malacoda are a gothic metal band from Oakville Ontario. Performing heavy riffs along side atmospheric synth giving off an incredibly special atmosphere.
Malacoda also have a new EP, “Crawling Chaos” coming out April 2nd and I strongly recommend picking it up and listening once it has been released.
Lyrically the newest EP is a masterpiece with what seems like an almost Lovecraftian style. Offering a fresh take on the gothic metal genre Malacoda are a band to get behind with their heavy drumming and incredibly atmospheric atmosphere from beginning to end. At certain points of the EP you will also hear strong brutality behind the singing literally screaming the lyrics out with supreme emotion.
One negative I have to point out is that at elements the synth side of the tracks does unfortunately overtake the instrumental work meaning you cannot hear elements in the guitar work. Which in terms of atmospheric metal isn’t a problem however as a reviewer I have to nit pick everything.
After a while the band does unfortunately get quite repetitive and you can find yourself getting bored with the music.
All together Malacoda are a great group and I look forward to hearing everyone’s opinions on the new EP as I think it’s a masterpiece in Gothic Metal.
Presave the new EP here:

Amazing together we are helping the underground scene!
Unholy Desecration
From Texas comes the blackened death metal group Unholy Desecration. Taking influence from early Belphegor and Behemoth
If you are a fan of your death metal, then I highly suggest giving Unholy Desecration a listen. They have an incredibly unique style with powerful gut punching drums, deep face melting guitar and near extremely low guttural vocals. Their music offers us the feeling of power and it hardly quits.
My personally favourite song out of their discography has to be At One With Hell as it makes me want to summon Satan just so I can punch him clean in the nose. Kickstarting with the brutality of the drums and carrying the rhythm throughout the whole track.
If you dislike the more extreme style of metal, then this band is not for you.
As a reviewer I must come up with negatives however I must admit I am struggling to come up with any when it comes to Unholy Desecration. There is one thing however, but it is purely as I am personally more of a fan of speed metal and thrash, there are certain songs where I think it would sound a lot better if I were sped up a little bit to give it much more of a mosh pit feeling. This is an extraordinarily small amount of their catalogue that I think needs more speed.
All together I recommend listening to Unholy Desecration as they are a powerfully brutal band and it wouldn’t surprise me if they are big enough to tour the world one day.

Corrozion review
Corrozion is a rock metal band that formed in 2016 and was founded in Angers, France, under the impulse of Damien Saunier the guitarist and Vincent Tanguy the bassist; then Nicolas Bouineau joined them 6 months later and they started to compose. Jean Philippe Blaise on drums arrived about a year ago after several drummer changes.
Corrozion take a lot of influence from Tool and this can definitely be told in their music. Escpecially in the song Come Back to Life which sounds identical to Tool during 10,000 days era with a different singer.
I've been listening to both their recorded songs on Spotify all day and i would love to see them live as it screams my style of metal from when I was back at college.
With many progressive elements in their music with expert timing and changes in signatures and powerful riffs Corrozion a band that are incredibly likely to start headlining festivals in the future.
Once they release a full EP I will definitely be picking up a physical copy.
I highly suggest listening to Corrozion if you are a fan of Tool or Deftones as it will be right up your street.

Moshin’ the Roof On Volume 2 – UK Thrashers
UK Thrashers are an amazing group doing podcasts, news, merch and reviews all whilst raising money to help the homeless. If you are a fan of the UK underground metal scene and haven’t heard of UK Thrashers then you are extremely missing out.
One of the coolest projects that UK Thrashers have ever done was the original Moshin’ The Roof On. So when I found out that they were releasing a second Volume to the classic album I pre-ordered one instantly and I urge you to do so as well as all profits go to Shelter whom help homeless people as no one should be left outside in the cold.
However, onto the album.
Moshin’ The Roof On Vol. 2 is a collection album with loads of underground metal bands ranging in genres however sticking close to the classic thrash metal genre. Moshin’ The Roof On Vol 2 has many bands featuring and below I have gone into some of my favourite
If you are a fan of thrash then I highly suggest picking up this collection in the link at the end of this review.
I have listened to this album beginning to end multiple times now and I can happily state it is one of my favourite releases and will be for a good while. Offering many different genres of thrash, this album doesn’t stop, it is fun and enjoyable from beginning to end. Certain songs in my opinion are better than others but that is purely due to my personal taste. I would strongly recommend you all listen to the album start to finish as you most likely will find a song that you prefer.
One of my favourite songs off Vol 2 is Buried Alive by Sawticide as it is a perfect of slower more methodical guitar sections and deep pounding thrash. The vocals fit in perfect to the song however they are relatively faint in comparison to the guitar and at some points the bass can be heard over the rest so the mixing can use a slight bit of work. But, don’t let this fool you the raw talent behind this track is superb and I can imagine it being an amazing song to hear in the live setting.
My absolute favourite song off the whole album is Guilty Of Hatred by Ashen Crown which offers us a direct kick in the gut to set the bomb of a song off with heavy and sometimes guttural vocals Guilty Of Hatred is everything that I look for in a heavy thrash track with sheer brutality mixed in with complex riffs this track is a must listen.
The Silence In My Head by In Which It Burns is the song that starts a wall of death. With an opening guitar riff throwing us in shallow then instantly hitting us deep with the quick blast of drums. Making you want to punch someone in the best of possible ways.
Although I haven’t gone into every track off this new collection I strongly urge everyone whom reads this review to pick up the new album you are supporting the underground metal scene whilst donating to a great charity. Although as a reviewer I am meant to sit here and say what is good and what is bad this album is one of those where everyone has different tastes and this album is a variety box so there is something for everyone.
