As severe weather awareness week continues, Its important to remember what to do when severe weather is expected and is about to occur. Here are some things to always remember when the potential for severe weather is forecasted to occur.
1. Know where your safe spot is located within your home or apartment building or even your business.
Remember, your safe spot should be on the lowest level of your home or apartment building and should be in the most interior part of the structure. Some great examples of safe spots to go to for shelter during severe storms is a basement. A basement is the best and highly recommended place to go to for shelter during severe weather. However, not all homes are built with basements and if you live in a house without a basement, always find an alternative location for shelter such as a bathroom, closet, stairwell, interior hallway. Always avoid rooms with windows because flying broken glass is very dangerous during tornadoes and storms. Remember to bring something sturdy to cover yourself up with such as a mattress, blanket, pillow, etc. Helmets are always recommended to have on hand and have on your head during severe weather because blunt force trauma to the head is the number 1 leading cause of death from flying debris created by tornadoes. If you live in a mobile/trailer type of home, evacuate IMMEDIATELY. Mobile homes and out buildings will offer no shelter from any tornado or severe storm. If you are driving during a Tornado Warning, pull off to the side of the road and get out of the car and find a ditch to hunker down in. Never take shelter on or under a highway overpass since the winds from a tornado can get funneled in under the overpass and cause the winds to accelerate.
2. Have multiple ways to recieve watches and warnings especially at night. Outdoor sirens should not be trusted to wake you up in a tornado warning. One really useful tool to have to receive watches and warnings is by purchasing a Noaa all hazards weather alert radio which provides and audible siren when an alert is issued for your county/area. Noaa all hazards weather alert radios can be purchased from retailers such as Amazon and walmart. Another way to receive alerts is via WEA (Wireless Emergency Alerts) on your phone. Make sure you charge your cell phone.
3. If your area suffers extensive damage including power lines being down, NEVER touch any downed power lines or transformers since they could still be live. ALWAYS ASSUME THAT THEY ARE LIVE WIRES!
4. When a Severe weather watch (Severe Thunderstorm watch or Tornado Watch) is issued for your county/area, that is YOUR SIGNAL to start preparing for possible incoming severe storms. Make sure your flashlights have fresh batteries and are easily accessible, that your lanterns are charged and are easily accessible as well, start charging your cell phones, remember where your severe weather safety spot/shelter is located incase your county/area goes under a warning. Have your noaa weather alert radio ready to go and make sure you have fresh batteries for your weather radio incase you lose power during storms. If you have a chainsaw, make sure it is sharpened, gased and oiled and is ready to go incase if you or any of your neighbors have any down trees. ALWAYS CALL 9-1-1 if you have an Emergency (Medical, fire, etc)during the storms.
5. Have first aid kits available and ready as injuries are always possible with any severe thunderstorm or Tornado.
6. If you have a home security system that communicates with your alarm monitoring company via LTE cellular network, be sure to conduct a communication test of your alarm system with your alarm monitoring company to make sure that your system is ready to go for calling out for help in the event that you have an emergency and you can’t get to a phone to call 9-1-1. Remember that before you conduct a test on your alarm system by tripping an alarm, always remember to call your alarm monitoring company to have your system placed on test while you conduct the test. This will help to prevent any unnecessary dispatches of your local police, fire and ambulance services. Once you are finished testing your alarm system, make sure you call your central monitoring station to let them know that you have finished testing your system and to ask them if they received your signals from your alarm system during the test. If they did, ask them to read them off one by one to confirm signals from your alarm system sensors were received as well as any panic alarms that you sent via your alarm keypad’s panic buttons. If the central station did receive all of the signals you sent during your test, you can ask them to take your system off of test and place it back online that way when your alarm system is tripped and a signal is received at the central station, your central monitoring station will call you inorder to verify your alarm signal(s) and dispatch emergency personnel if needed.
6. Be a storm tracker. if you suffered any damage from the storm(s) no matter if it’s Tornado, damaging winds, or Hail, never hesitate to report it to the national weather service in Wilmington, Ohio or the national weather service in Indianapolis, Indiana for those of you that live in Randolph county, indiana. and also report it to the local news station and for those of you that follow this page, send your storm reports and any pictures or videos of what you witnessed during or after the storms have passed to The miami valley weather storm center either via facebook messenger, or by emailing your report to the miami valley weather storm center email address which is [email protected] be sure to include a your city/town name, and a description of the damage that you suffered and any pictures or videos that you have of the damage. And if it’s ok with you, i (forecaster mason willetts) would be more than happy to send your report onto the national weather service.

No matter what warning your county/area is put under, always take the necessary precautions to stay safe even if its a Severe Thunderstorm Warning, always treat a severe thunderstorm warning as if it is a Tornado warning.
Severe Weather Awareness Week in Ohio continues. Often times, straight line winds from severe thunderstorms can result in as much damage as tornados. So if a severe thunderstorm warning is issued for your area, treat it with the same level of urgency as a tornado warning.
