Happy Saturday everyone! Sharing 3 things from our little homestead... w**d piles are loved by chickens, when you sprinkle them with a bit of chicken chow! Once they are done scratching and walking and pecking, this will be reduced by over half and ready for the compost bin.
That mud tunnel is home to ground spiders. We never see them, but we see their home.
And we have wild/native Passion Fruit growing on our property! Any growing near the garden fence are encouraged to stay, by weaving the vines in with the fence wire.
Today we are sharing our journey of blogging with Tell Us About Blogging, over this mutton! Sometimes the road is long or bumpy, but for us all it is where we want to spend our time!

Sorry, not sorry! I have updated this recipe for Stick Blender Mayonnaise twice now, because it wasn't enough to make tasty mayo at home, I wanted mayonnaise that was thick like the commercial variety I had eaten most of my life, and this is it!

Terry and I were more fortunate than many during the repair of the damage that tropical storm Beryl left behind. Today we were on day 5, with no electricity.
Since we live in an RV our basic needs are covered, by propane, fridge, water heater, and cook stove.
But in our current season, keeping cool enough to stay healthy was the most important task, we managed everyday. And more so for our grandson. But we made it through, as we always do, because having family to help, is always the first tool out of the toolbox!
Special thanks to all who continued to check in with us on social media, it was appreciated so much!
Let the cooking (and some A/C) begin, we have electricity once again!
Nem Nuong Vietnamese Pork Loaf, your best friend in these warm days for easy dinners. Make a noodle-y bowl of Pho or a crispy and light Bahn Mi Sandwich!

Boiling water on the propane stove today. What an I cooking? Nothing really, in the storm we had, I now have 1 small but growing (fire/biting ants) ant hill, right by our caravan. Where they moved to, when dislocated by the storm. Our hens won't eat them, and we don't want them! Boiling water poured over the mound will kill them and hopefully their Queen, as well. As a species, they will be back, but I can always make more boiling water...
Fresh Fruit Platter with Lemon Creme Syrup, will be your new family favorite dessert this summer. Pick a fruit and pick a berry, drizzle on some syrup and enjoy a healthy, good for you dessert!

Cinnamon Flats, with cinnamon extract (that you make yourself!), ground cinnamon in the cookie dough and then rolled in cinnamon sugar before baking. Even with all that, not too spicy...you are going to love these cookies!

Now that I have a stove for the canning kitchen, getting a crop or two from the garden would be nice! We are harvesting cucumbers, and naturally fermented pickles (both whole and spears) have been made. Next is sweet pickle relish.
Honey Pork with Pineapple and Roasted Chilies, the perfect open pan simmered dinner, not too sweet and not too spicy!

With canopy! The rhubarb is much happier! Let's see if I get to harvest a few stalks...
Naturally Fermented Pickles, so easy folks have been making these for hundreds of years!

Grandma's Two Day Sweet Pickle Slices, updated for garden cucumbers too!

Yikes, it is too hot to work in the garden, but we did get a shade canopy over the rhubarb, some thin branches and an old towel. If nothing else I would like to keep the rhubarb alive until I can find a better location to move it to.
Day one, of Grandma's Two Day Sweet Pickles are on the stove cooling...
Three things!
We made clothes lines between the trees, which meant I was able to dig out my old fashioned wooden clothes pins from Montana. We moved the roses away from our caravan. Roses tend to draw ants, and ants love to visit...we have been finding them in the caravan since the rains began in early spring. It has not been fun.
The roses are now a demarcation line separating "yard" from meadow.
And lastly, we have wild passion fruit growing!
Regarding our injured hen, she is doing very well. Keeping up with the other 5 in play and foraging. I picked up dried worms so she gets enough protein to heal completely. Our rooster however was injured so badly he is gone. I am sure he gave a good fight for his ladies and probably is the reason only one hen was injured. Ironically he was just learning to crow. And why he came to our house to do it each early morning I do not know, but this morning his faltering c**k a doodle do was sorely missed.
Warning social rant!
Because life isn't all Blueberry Bushes, bird feeders and cute baby goats in the country.
Yesterday a stray dog entered our property and took out 2 of our young chickens. Not a good day, we will have to deal with the loss of our ladies, and the dog.
Sadly we are the perfect area for people to drop off dogs (and cats) they no longer want. And this is not the first time that this has happened. Shortly after moving here a mama dog and several.puppies were abandoned. We got a rescue organization involved to help with the puppies.
Unfortunately the Animal Shelters are at capacity due to so many being abandoned, that often they do not accept any more animals for weeks at a time.
But the responsibility is with the pet owner, and not the animal shelter. And certainly not an obscure country road drop off.
People when you dump your animal, you add to the problems of over population and creating feral and now dangerous animals fighting to survive.
We all deserve better, first and formost your pet that you no longer want and then the folks that have to clean up the mess you created.
Spay, neuter, and do right by these animals.
We have cucumbers coming off the vines faster than we can eat them fresh! So I put together a half gallon jar of old fashioned salt brine fermented pickles. And it turns out, they are delicious!
Brown Sugar Sour Cream Banana Bread! So tender it is more cake than bread, and the perfect use for those bananas on the counter...
