Fun loving, talented photographer Pooya Nabei shares his multilayered story and experiences moving from Iran to Canada at the tender age of 17. He walks us through adjusting to a new culture, language, social dynamic and more. Pooya’s wonderful journey of growing through his curiosities in photography and the arts which ultimately he made into a career. His optimism to try new things, explore and immerse himself into Canadian culture and lifestyle was, and still is courageous. He explains from an immigrants point of view how he struggled and still struggles with the balancing act of a Canadian Pooya vs Iranian Pooya. “It’s a constant struggle as an immigrant because you are always thinking about who you are, who you want to be, and how you want to go forward.” -Pooya Nabei (aka: the dude with the wicked hair!)

A heartfelt, enlightening conversation that we couldn’t be more proud of our friend for feeling comfortable enough to share with us all.

When we lean in to our discomforts with curiosity and love we can better understand how we truly feel. Sometimes finding out how we feel starts with the basics. 🙋🏽‍♀️ Simply identifying where you feel it in your body is the first step. 🧘🏽‍♀️ After some deep breaths in to that area you can start to work toward understanding what the feeling actually is. From there you want to practice vocalizing it and not feel like you’re inconveniencing anybody. Own those feelings, share them (when it’s appropriate). ✨The other important piece is asking the human you wish to share with if they have the capacity to hear you share your feelings before you speak them.

We’re airing our first episode to align with Feb 14 in hopes to raise more awareness around the Missing & Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls, and 2SLGBTQQIA.

Since 1992 this has been an annual March that’s now held in multiple cities across Canada and the United States. On this day and every day we honour all of our loved ones who were lost and many who are still missing.

With Marlayna opening up a little about this in our conversation she felt aligning this episode with the day of this movement only made sense. Her mom is very much a part of her story and healing journey and will hopefully inspire others to be curious, educate themselves on this topic and most importantly seek trauma healing as well.

What if you could be the person you didn’t have growing up?

In our next episode dropping next week Feb 14th, I Nicole Sjostedt & special guest Marlayna Pincott dive deep into our individual experiences being confused about our cultures, ethnicity and heritage from our childhood into adulthood. A big part of what’s driven both of us to be curious, rebuild, and work toward being enthralled in our new learned cultures, is to be able to pass it all down to the next generation.

raise your hand if you’ve ever said “that’s just the way i am” 🙋

we are definitely guilty of this over the course of our lives. it has been so empowering to ask why we are the way we are and have a better understanding of ourselves. digging deep into our past has been instrumental in helping us move forward and live more fulfilling lives.

tune into our latest episode to hear about what we have discovered and how we have been able to unpack our past experiences.

soooooo….things got a little heavy this week. while recording the dating episode a couple weeks back, we discovered some old baggage. baggage that needed to be claimed and unpacked.
given we both entered our twenties and the working world in the 90s…it’s not really a surprise that we encountered discrimination in the workplace and beyond. after all, sexual harassment and misogyny were served up on the regular. thankfully what was NBD back then, is now a WTAF. especially in the corporate world.

BUT, we also can’t pretend all that bad s**t didn’t happen…or pretend that it didn’t leave its mark. so we rewind the tape to unpack some of the baggage, and in the process try to lighten the load and heal some of these wounded parts of us.

trigger warning: this episode contains discussions that may be sensitive regarding sexual harassment and sexual assault.
