SS24 China International Fashion Week: Contemporary Innovation in Chinese Aesthetics
China International Fashion Week for Spring/Summer 2024, which recently concluded, continues to generate excitement and discussion in the fashion world. It has been a spectacular showcase of visual and cultural expressions of Chinese aesthetics.
Elegance: Awakening Aesthetic Genes
Chinese aesthetics emphasize the fusion of harmony, nature, and human spirit, seeking to capture artistic and inner charm. In this season of China International Fashion Week, designers drew inspiration from the rich history and traditional culture of China, skillfully incorporating elements such as color, patterns, structure, stories, and ambiance into their fashion designs.
The opening show by MISUITI, drawing from the history of the Qin and Han dynasties, brought the three major themes of "Expedition, Strategy, and Triumph" into the modern stage. "Golden Award" designer CHICCO MAO drew inspiration from the "Classic of Mountains and Seas." MOHANYUN also continued the narrative from the same text, exploring the fusion of Eastern aesthetics and contemporary pop culture with the imagery of divine grass and blessings. "Life in the Left" found inspiration in Bai Juyi's "Song of Everlasting Sorrow," breathing new life into traditional horse-faced skirts with contemporary design. JINBA Men's Fashion used inspiration from intangible cultural heritage like bamboo weaving, Jun porcelain, and dragon patterns to tell the story of "Heirs of the Dragon." It's evident that Chinese traditional aesthetics are diverse, profound, and influential.
Reinvention: A Fusion of East and West
In this fashion week, designers cleverly applied modern design techniques and materials to their creations, using high-tech fabrics, 3D printing, and three-dimensional cutting techniques to juxtapose traditional elements with modern styles, creating unique aesthetic styles.
JUMPER ZHANG presented traditional Chinese patterns, "Da Yuan Tuan Wen," using entirely handmade techniques like bead embroidery, needlework, patchwork embroidery, stacking, weaving, and beadwork. HUANG GANG utilized Xiangyun silk fabric for his creations, combining various intangible cultural heritage techniques with STEIGER's leading 3D knitting and printing technology. SHANG JIU KAI used new materials like elastic Song brocade, hollow Song brocade, and blended Song brocade to infuse Song brocade clothing with a contemporary feel. ZIFEI WANG, on the other hand, intertwined Song brocade with metal, creating a subversive "Song Dynasty Punk" look.
This season's fashion week saw the emergence of many talented young designers who exhibited a keen fashion sense, unique creativity, and a fresh understanding of Chinese aesthetics. PLAYTOP integrated traditional Chinese armor with modern high-tech fibers, textile technologies, and ergonomics for sportswear. KIMUSSO drew elements from the "Legend of the White Snake," using leather, metal, and other elements to convey the dual nature of softness and strength in the White Snake and the Green Snake. MOE HO, adopting a new Chinese style, reimagined qipao, Zhongshan suit, and jazz music to create a vintage "Cabaret" runway.
Immersion: Embracing Eastern Sensibilities
The natural perspective of Chinese aesthetics is also widely reflected in the fashion world. Designers are drawing inspiration from nature and incorporating sustainable materials combined with intangible cultural heritage techniques to create their works.
In this season of China International Fashion Week, "Golden Award" designers WU Xuewei and WU Xuekai collaborated on the WU/D New Series, incorporating plant branches, leaves, flowers, walnuts, and intangible cultural heritage plant dyeing techniques. "Golden Award" designer ZHANG Zhaoda, along with ZHANG Kaihui, created the "Weave Love Action: Date with Genius Moms" charity fashion show and Weave Love Action launch event, utilizing six intangible heritage handicrafts: Qiang embroidery, Fengxiang dyeing, Hongxiu embroidery, Xixiu embroidery, Miaoxiu embroidery, and Xilanka'pu. JINHI combined with Nansha olive core Xiangyun silk to develop the unique beauty of Xiangyun silk. SHUXUAN G. combined intangible heritage fabric Xiangyun silk with fan-shaped elements. SHIJIE used intangible heritage techniques such as Xiangyun silk, plant dyeing, tie-dye, and coiled buttons, hand-painting images of Dunhuang ink paintings and calligraphy, showcasing the elegance of "ease" in the cultural process of Chinese aesthetics. TUOJI, drawing inspiration from Guizhou's Miao culture, used Xiangyun silk, natural silk, and h**p to create a powerful and textured interpretation of "water." VALLEYOUTH integrated intangible heritage techniques like Jimo lace into modern men's fashion, celebrating the authenticity of nature.
The essence of traditional Chinese cultural aesthetics goes beyond simple symbol transplantation and collage. Only through deep spiritual understanding and interpretation can its true significance be realized. Designers and brands at China International Fashion Week are actively responding to traditional culture and intangible heritage preservation, showing the world a diverse, inclusive, and innovative Chinese fashion industry.
