Slavery’s dying gasps have not been extinguished.

After the Confederate General surrendered, and two years after the Emancipation Proclamation, Texas enslavers illegally held on to slavery. Enforcement of the law required force by the Federal Government. Pictured is General Order No. 3, read in Galveston, TX on June 19th, 1865, by US Brigadier General Gordon Grander. "The people of Texas are informed that, in accordance with a proclamation from the Executive of the United States, all slaves are free. This involves an absolute equality of personal rights and rights of property between former masters and slaves, and the connection heretofore existing between them becomes that between employer and hired labor. The freedmen are advised to remain quietly at their present homes and work for wages. They are informed that they will not be allowed to collect at military posts and that they will not be supported in idleness either there or elsewhere." This was the first time many of those enslaved in Texas had been informed of their freedom, two and a half years after it was granted.

On June 19, 1865, freedom came for the 250,000 enslaved people of Texas.

This Juneteenth we recognize the end of America’s horrific time of slavery and the need for recommitment to eradicating systemic racism and inequity.
