Poison Arrow
The images for this song were inspired initially by staring at our Grandfathers grandfathers wheelbarrow which sat upsidedown under a little tree in his back garden. Our Grandfather was very sentimentality attached to the wheelbarrow and had held onto it for many years despite the rust and holes in it. He often told a story of sitting in his Grandfathers shed during a lightning storm and listening to his stories with the rain pounding on the roof. A lovely image. And lovely to have an object existing through generations.
This was originally a poem and at the time I was seeing through a veil of deception for the first time. An immature love story.. I was being convinced of a reality that wasn't true, but I wanted it to be true so that I didn't have to face the reality of the fact that someone would lie to me.. lovely complex subject matter! I wrote the words as I stared at the wheelbarrow.. so of course a series of garden implements began to tell the story.
Julie applied her usual instant psychic harmonies and when I played it for her she leaned out and plucked the bass string and so we performed it like this from day one with both of us playing the guitar and facing each other.
Photographed is Nick Boon, visual artist/printmaker extraordinaire and radio thermin operator. Nick played in a few of our big shows and it was always a pleasure to have him around!
