On behalf of the Support Smyrna board, we would like to wish all of Smyrna a happy and safe 4th of July!
Happy Juneteenth, Smyrna! Today, we commemorate the historic day of June 19, 1865, when the last enslaved African Americans in Texas were informed of their freedom, marking the end of slavery in the United States. This day celebrates resilience, freedom, and the rich contributions of African American culture. As a city that prides itself on diversity and inclusion, Support Smyrna stands together in honoring this important milestone in our nation’s history.
Happy Father’s Day to all the amazing fathers, father figures, and mentors in the City of Smyrna! Today, we celebrate the love, guidance, and support you provide. Thank you for making our community stronger and brighter.
We are thankful to community partners like the L&C Wood Family Foundation for their tireless support in uplifting our community, and making a difference throughout Cobb County. Thank you for impactful partnership with Support Smyrna.

From the Smyrna Historical Society:
Julia Roberts, Academy Award-winning actress
Julia Roberts was born on October 28, 1967, in Smyrna, Georgia, a suburb of Atlanta, to Betty Lou Bredemus (1934–2015) and Walter Grady Roberts (1933–1977). Roberts’s parents, one-time actors and playwrights, met while performing in theatrical productions for the armed forces. They later co-founded the Atlanta Actors and Writers Workshop in Atlanta, off Juniper Street in Midtown. They ran a children’s acting school in Decatur, Georgia, while they were expecting Julia. The children of Coretta and Martin Luther King Jr. attended the school; Walter Roberts served as acting coach for their daughter, Yolanda. As a thank-you for his service, Mrs. King paid Mrs. Roberts’s hospital bill when Julia was born. From 1972, Roberts lived in Smyrna, Georgia, where she attended Fitzhugh Lee Elementary School, Griffin Middle School, and Campbell High School. Roberts wanted to be a veterinarian as a child. She also played the clarinet in her school band. After graduating from Smyrna’s Campbell High School, she attended Georgia State University but did not graduate. She later headed to New York City to pursue a career in acting. Once there, she signed with the Click Modeling Agency and enrolled in acting classes. Julia Roberts starred in Mystic Pizza, Pretty Woman, Erin Brockovich, Steel Magnolias, Ocean’s Eleven , Hook just to name a few of her movies. She is one of the highest paid female actresses.
Kicking off Women’s History Month, we recognize the first Woman Mayor of Smyrna, Mayor Lorena Pace Pruitt.
According to the AJC: “In her two-term tenure, Pruitt ordered some of Smyrna’s first paved roads and talked Atlanta Mayor William B. Hartsfield into letting the small city connect an eight-inch water line to the big city’s running-water system.
“They charmed Mayor Hartsfield into running a water pipe across the Chattahoochee to Smyrna, and Smyrna had the water it needed to grow,” Pruitt’s son Rex told the Constitution in 1981.
Before then, he said, they’d been using artesian wells.
“At times, we couldn’t get enough water to take a bath,” he Rex told the AJC in 1994. He was 74 at the time and living in Augusta.
During World War II, that water system ended up supplying the Bell Bomber Plan, where Pruitt managed cafeterias that served as many as 1,200 workers two meals a day.
“During her administration,” Rex said in 1981, “the first paving of streets were done. There had been only one paved street, running north and south in Atlanta.”
