Brand New Artist: Tamerlie J. Philippe presents Big Brother

A native of Port-au-Prince, Haiti, grew up amidst a captivating blend of beauty and turmoil. Her artistic journey began in Montreal, where she embraced her creative spirit and honed her skills. Currently based in Hungary, Tamerlie embarks on inspiring travels, uncovering hidden gems across the globe. In 2020, she embarked on a profound relationship with painting, still navigating her emotions towards it. This mutual understanding between Tamerlie and her art is both intriguing and evolving. Music and coffee serve as constant companions during their creative encounters. Tamerlie's artistry blossomed when a dream led her to create "Ghost town," where the brush seemed guided by an unseen force. Faces without features felt natural, and this distinct style has become a signature of her work. Another piece, "Woslè," sketched by friend Saradjen Bartley, further embodied this intriguing absence of facial features. Tamerlie embraces the enigmatic allure of faceless characters, shaping her artistic expression.

Hap's illustration of a black samurai is a breathtaking piece of artwork that commands attention with its bold and powerful presence. The samurai is depicted in a dynamic pose, exuding strength and confidence. Hair Tales by award winning artist Tamary Kudita is available now as part of our editions series - these are limited edition signed and numbered prints by the artist.

Tamary says “In this image I examine the beauty of black hair and how it’s gone under significant changes in order to arrive to this point where we celebrate it in all its glory. The afro combs are also significant in how the heritage of our hair has been shaped. I also incorporate coins as means of unpicking an in-visible system which creates social structures of inequities. I create a backdrop which incorporates the Zimbabwean bird motif together with old Zimbabwean coins with the late queen Elizabeth’s face on them, as a way of commenting on misfortunes of life which resulted in a subversion of power dynamics. I also implore the idea of hair as a currency which has shaped our contemporary realities.”
