The Thane Creek was declared as Ramsar Site on 15 August 2022. It is one of the largest Ramsar site (around 6,500 hectares including eco-sensetive zone) and is the First Ramsar wetland in the metropolitan region. It is also the Third Ramsar Site from Maharashtra and 72nd in India.
