Someone in Portland let go of this gem. What does that say about their taste in music?

A funny writeup about our last show that was 18 years ago today:

On one Sunday night in 1998, a couple friends and I went to the Fireside Bowl sight unseen, having no knowledge of who was playing, as usual. The door charge was $3. We walked in to see a band with a vocalist onstage completely covered in some kind of makeshift aluminum foil warlock/gargoyle costume, and one of those tacky s*x shop pink elephant thongs. I cracked open a beer, this creature finished a song, and smirkingly asked if anyone wanted a dollar. I said "sure!", and he pulled a dollar bill out of his rear end and gave it to me. Then they staggered through a half baked intro/medley of Black Sabbath's "Iron Man" and stopped abruptly in the middle of it for "Pete", the singer, to do some kind of banter about how he had to stuff toilet paper into the elephant trunk of his thong, because his p***s wasn't big enough to fill it alone. My words won't do justice to the crazy vibes that Luke Skawalker evoked, but this man's lively and bizarre mode of conception was somehow both cockamamie and captivating to me. His overall demeanor was a mixture of greaser/gas station attendant who was one part good natured, wild eyed Woody Woodpecker and one part psychotic suburban dipsomaniac, and I will never forget it.

Anyhow, after they played what ended up being their last show, Pete autographed the stinky dollar bill, and handed me some tapes right around the same time that someone who'd had a few too many started stripping naked and dry hu***ng the merch tables, causing all of them to fall onto the floor, and a ton of people to steal a lot of their stickers and tapes.

Fun things you find with the help of google:

At 15, skateboarding, Dungeons and Dragons and drugs were my only escape from the horrors of everyday life. But I soon added a new ingredient to my delinquent stew. Some kids from my school were in a death metal band and invited everyone to their first show. When my best friend and I got to the venue, my world changed. It was a sh****le bar in a sh****le part of my hometown. Kids were skating in the parking lot, smoking ci******es and w**d.

Inside, the bands were sitting around waiting to get started. We sat next to a guy who looked like a filthy Thor. He was the bass player for opening band Luke Skawalker. Next to him was a guy with thin sideburns and a short pompadour scribbling words on a crumpled piece of paper. Filthy Thor called us over to mock Sideburns-Pompadour, his singer, who was writing lyrics just minutes before the show.

When they hit the stage, they were wild. Everyone danced and thrashed in the pit, a manic display of constructed violence in movement. We caught on quickly and jumped in. There was no ego. No pomp. Just straightforward momentum. Was Luke Skawalker good? Hell no. They were sloppy but fun. They kicked their trumpet player out of the band during the second song. They made us laugh and carried us along as one of them. Bands I’d seen before at county fairs with my parents, like Steppenwolf and 3 Dog Night, and the bands on MTV were something separate. They seemed higher, untouchable. Here, in this dingy bar with a low stage and makeshift dance floor, it was an inclusive community. We, as the audience, were as much a part of the show as the bands.

Look at this insane list of shows! Who would have ever dreamt that the fine folks that curated Stalag 13 would have ever let Luke Skawalker sully one of their lineups. Well on this day 18 years ago, they did just that! We didn't disgrace this show list, but we were privileged to share the stage for the first of four times with Short Hate Temper. Bongzilla lumbered through their set in a state of near-consciousness & Cattle Press improved their entire set with a brand new drummer. In a week full of highlights, this was one of the best shows from our one and only tour.

Friends,

Today we celebrate the 20th Anniversary of our first practice! Some may say that pure genius was born right then and there.

To celebrate this landmark occasion we would like to announce that we will not be playing a reunion show. This is our gift to you!!! You're welcome.

Much love,
Luke Skawalker
