A lot of songwriters put pen to paper on that terrible day in September of 2001. I was no different. This was my contribution to the collective. I'll share another one later.
This was an early version, recorded the same day I wrote it. "The Hardest Part of Love is Falling Out".
Falling Out Written after reading a magazine article about a guy who lost his wife in the 911 tragedy.
Here's an easy one... in which song do these two photos have something in common?

My Morning Love.
by: Steve Mehal 1982c p
I came home one night
And I could tell by her tone
And the way she laid there
She didn't want to be alone
She took my hand
And said, "babe, lay beside me"
We held each other till the break of day
Came to set us free
(Chorus)
She gives me the morning again
I wish this feeling would never end
Silver clouds always hover above
When I'm thinking 'bout my morning love
 She whispers softly
Things we both want to hear
Love is the reason
Why we're both here
And with her senses
She controls my mind
She is the reason
Why the Sun always shines
(Chorus)
And when it's over
And we say goodbye
I wish the day would move as quickly
As an eagle flies
But then, the night time
Returns like an old friend
And I'll drive till the morning
When we'll make love again
(Chorus)

Biography- written by Lester Carmichael. Former writer for the Buffalo Times newspaper.
Steve Mehal. A name that's often mispronounced and misspelled but never misinterpreted when it comes to music. This one of a kind crowd pleaser grew up in the small town of North Royalton, Ohio and started playing guitar at the age of four. On a plastic Beatles children's guitar, he actually picked out notes from songs on the radio. By the age of nine, the folk scare of the '60 was in full swing and he moved up into playing at The local Catholic Church at their folk Mass.
Years passed and by age 14, Steve could play along with just about any song on the radio whether it was rock, easy listening, folk or country. In high school, he played the violin in the school orchestra and the flute in the symphonic band. In 1979 as a junior in high school, Steve met a person that was to become his mentor. Alex Bevan, a local Cleveland musician played at his high school and Steve decided that's what he wanted to do. As a senior, he enrolled in a local seminary to become a Roman Catholic priest but just before the semester started he had a change of heart and decided to go into the United States Coast Guard. After honorably discharged, he decided to take music a lot more seriously and began writing. By the end of 1982, he had written more than a hundred songs.
In the fall of 1982, Steve took his music on the road and booked a college tour playing 18 colleges in 13 states. The tour was a success! He then needed something to sell at his shows so through a mutual friend, he hooked up with bassist Jim Pawelecki and drummer Al Scotchir. The newly formed band was called SMB. An acronym for the Steve Mehal Band. His first album was released the spring of 1983 titled, Songs From A Greyhound adding a member, Debbie Shreves from Toledo Ohio on vocal harmonies. That album sold 850 copies in northeastern Ohio alone. Total, it sold 2100 copies which was not too shabby for a local musician without a record contract in those days. In the fall of 1984, Steve released his second album, Soft Spoken and in the summer of 1985 a third album entitled, Soft Spoken II.
It wasn't until 1997 that he released his latest album, Closed For the Season which he recorded and produced himself. Some of the artists that Steve has performed with either as an opening act or part of the band include The Everly Brothers, Mary Chapin Carpenter, Kathy Mattea, Joan Baez, Pure Prairie League, Alison Krauss, Dan Fogelberg, Three Dog Night and Christian artist, Randy Stonehill.
In 1990, Steve began driving semi truck hauling gasoline throughout northeastern Ohio. Music was put on the back burners because he was now married and raising a family. He and now former wife Lori Datko along with Terri Riddle and Jim Pawelecki formed a band known as The Original Copy Band. They played at fairs and festivals and a lot of times just in the living room jamming and having fun.
It was around 1992 Steve began playing in coffee shops which at the time became a big thing in Northeast Ohio. He met his present wife, Carol at a local coffee shop and of course, wrote a song about it! Around 2010, he hooked up with a couple musicians who were playing the coffeehouse circuit. Linda Foster, Pete Vallejo and Steve became known as Back2Basics. Playing acoustic oldies and some originals, you could find them in coffee shops singing to a full house most of the time. Unfortunately, both Steve and his buddy Pete drove trucks and the workload became too intense to sustain a nightlife of music. Shortly after the group split, Linda found that she had cancer and passed away.
In recent days, as recent as November of 2021, Steve was diagnosed with head and neck cancer. He began treatment during the months following and as of now we are happy to say he is cancer-free! Arthritis and neuropathy in the hands and feet from diabetes makes it a real challenge to play guitar anymore. Steve has found some time on good days to do some live Facebook shows. In the future, he plans on releasing his fifth album called, Hometown.
