Mile 9 Farm
Mile 9 is a 3-acre sustainable farm in Huson, Montana. We produce vegetable and flower seeds, and raise laying hens.
Organically-grown tomato starts. Cherry tomato (Peacevine) and roma/paste tomato (Naples). In organic soil, started from my own organic seed stock. $4 each. Message me for purchase and pickup arrangements!
Is it time yet? Is it time yet?! If your soil had dried a bit but youre still a few eeks away from your area's last frost date, you could probably start getting peas and lettuce planted. And guess what? I still have some available in my shop!

Packing up some seed orders today and feeling so grateful. I love knowing that something I worked hard on is going to go out into the world and bring someone joy--and hopefully a delicious meal.
Ground pork, garlic, and onions...all raised on our property and ready to go into the crockpot for chili. Something about cooking with the ingredients you grew with your own sweat (and swear words) feels really different. More real somehow, more connected. Anyone else feel the same?
Seeds are ready for the coming growing season! Growing your own food is so satisfying. What will you try your hand at this year?

Gonna chop these babies up and freeze with chopped onions for soup base all winter.
The last of the that I pulled in this week. I'll let them finish ripening and cook them up into sauce. Seeds from these will be available as soon as they've passed germination testing!
I've been roasting my bumper crop of Winter Luxury pie pumpkins, pretty much every day. A lot of it is going in the freezer for later use, but today it's breakfast.
I have maybe an irrational attachment to these Winter Luxury pumpkins. They are delicious for sure, but netting on their rinds make them look like they're dusted with sugar. I got zero pumpkins last year bit this year? Bumper crop!
The seeds for the gorgeous cocozelle are in germination testing! Want to know when they're ready? Drop me your email address and I'll let you know!
Admiring these in the garden this cool, sprinkly morning. This variety is a mix of pink, white, and magenta flowers, with a few bi-color beauties thrown in. Fingers crossed I get a good seed set this year--they'll be available I. The shop this fall if so!
When your foot's broken but you still have farm chores to do. First chore of the day: cleaning all the dry grass and dirt off from last night's chores.

Check out this beauty--I just love those gorgeous stripes! It's a baby cocozelle zucchini, a bit more flavorful than your standard zukes. I've been keeping my eye out for blooms and this little bu**er sneaked by me. Time to get them under netting so I can prevent cross-pollination and have pure seeds in the shop this fall.
I can't wait for these marigolds to go to seed! They are just the right size for either growing in the ground or tucking into planters with other treasures. Look for them in my store late fall!
Nope, this lettuce isn't dirty. It's a new speckled variety I'm growing out this year. Can't wait to sample it and see how it tastes!
Green beans are poppin! These babies have had to gmfight through some crazy aggressive weeds but they are still just going to town! The first time I tried home-grown green beans I was shocked at how much better they tasted than the ones from the store. Green beans are pretty easy to grow, and equally easy to freeze for those long winter months too!
Bed prep this year is a million times easier thanks to a piece of equipment that i was nervous about spending money on. I'm thrilled to see how much of a difference it has made already. Even better that I had a helper running it today. 😋
Now taking orders for tomato seedlings, ready to be delivered locally at the end of May!
I have a paste variety good for fresh eating, salsa, and sauces, plus a delicious cherry tomato variety. Order from my site to reserve your plants. https://www.mile9farm.com/shop/live-plants
Producing our own food makes me really happy.
The sun is shining but it is cold with no cloud cover! To keep warm, I'm thinking about these little rays of 🌞 that I'll be growing again this year. Calendula is very easy to grow, and produces flowers that you can use in tinctures or salves to heal skin irritations. This variety, Resina, has the highest concentration of resins for herbal use. I've got plenty to share, over in my shop!
The big eraser and the really big sticky notes...time to plan the production beds! On the list this year: 3 varieties of lettuce, 2 pumpkin varieties, zucchini, green beans, shell peas, marigold, calendula, echinacea, and possibly carrot. What's on your list?
Hooray for the hens! One of them has started laying these beauties. Now for the other 2 to get the hint.
Winter is beautiful but this is the time of year when I start to really miss the smell of dirt.
In addition to growing more veggie varieties for seed, I'm going to put more effort into herbs this year. I already grow lavender and echinacea, but haven't done much in the way of harvesting and drying. I'm also going to try basil (again), sage, and oregano from seed, plus rosemary and thyme from transplants. What are you most excited to try this year?
One trick to growing tomatoes in Montana's short growing season is to choose varieties that produce smaller fruit--such as paste or cherry tomatoes. I have seeds available for both in my shop at www.mile9farm.com.
Let's go sit out on the porch and have some coffee. Oh wait...
Yeah, I shot this through the screen door cuz there was too much snow to open it all the way.
We're about to get a foot or so of snow followed by an arctic 'flash freeze.' This is about how we'll have to bundle up for the next few days.
The ladies squawking at the gate for food, but hardly laying any eggs, the little freeloaders.
I was tempted to add a filter to this to make it prettier but you know what? January just really isn't that pretty.
