The word Maundy comes from the latin, 'mandatum', or 'command' which refers to the instructions Jesus gave his disciples at the Last Supper. In many countries the day is known as Holy Thursday and is a public holiday. ... Maundy Thursday is part of Holy Week and is always the last Thursday before Easter.

THE BAPTISM OF THE LORD
January 10th

Collect Prayer:
Almighty ever-living God, who, when Christ had been baptized in the River Jordan and as the Holy Spirit descended upon him, solemnly declared him your beloved Son, grant that your children by adoption, reborn of water and the Holy Spirit, may always be well pleasing to you. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.

BEATITUDES: THE BE-ATTITUDE OF THE SAINTS/CHILDREN OF GOD Happy feast day! Whose feast? Yours and mine – our feast day. This is All Saints Day. We celebrate not only the feast of all the saints in heaven, but those on earth as well. It is a day when we give thanks that we are all part of God’s family. Perhaps, many of us are uncomfortable being called ...

Reflection for October 14, Wednesday of the 28th Week in Ordinary Time

Gospel: Luke 11:42-46

The Lord said:
“Woe to you Pharisees!
You pay tithes of mint and of rue and of every garden herb,
but you pay no attention to judgment and to love for God.
These you should have done, without overlooking the others.
Woe to you Pharisees!
You love the seat of honor in synagogues
and greetings in marketplaces.
Woe to you!
You are like unseen graves over which people unknowingly walk.”

Then one of the scholars of the law said to him in reply,
“Teacher, by saying this you are insulting us too.”
And he said, “Woe also to you scholars of the law!
You impose on people burdens hard to carry,
but you yourselves do not lift one finger to touch them.”

REFLECTION:

Jesus does not mince any words. He uses strong words of rebuke to teachers and lawyers in today’s gospel by saying, ‘woe to you.’ This is to point out that their religious practices do not spring from the love of God. It is because they fail to listen to God’s word and mislead the people they are supposed to guide in the ways of God.

Let us take a moment and put ourselves in the shoes of the Pharisees. How would we react to such public criticism? Will we get mad or make this an opportunity to look at our inner most being? The reality is: we all have “a Pharisee” within us. We become like them when we enslaved ourselves with anger, jealousy, enmity, ambitions, being judgmental, and many other unchristian attitudes. Sometimes the truth hurts and is “insulting” to a person’s pride so to speak. If one were truly humble, then a rebuke would be welcomed as a helpful form of correction. Sadly, the Pharisees appear to lack the necessary humility to let Jesus’ rebuke sink in.

May we never offend when someone correct us. May we receive other’s corrections as graces to cloth ourselves with humility and to help us on our way to holiness. 1 Peter 5:5-6 says, “God resists the proud but gives graces to the humble.”

The month of May is traditionally dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary. During this month of May, let us rediscover her maternal role in each of our lives. Let us offer our spiritual mother our sincere prayers, that just as she aided the first Apostles with her prayers, she may also guide and intercede for us in our journey of faith. Let us learn from her how to love and trust God completely and how to be faithful witnesses of the risen Lord.
