01.06.1963. - ESTABLISHED THE FIRST FERRY LINE THAT CONNECTED THE MAINLAND AND RAB

The first ferry line connecting the mainland and the island of Rab with a converted fishing boat "Ćutin" was established on this day in 1963.

📍 Have you heard about "Croatian Alcatraz" - Goli otok?

The Croatian name of the island means literally “naked island” and is a reference to the fact that it is so barren. One of the most notorious communist prisons in Europe, opened right after the WW2 and closed in 1988. Prior to the arrival of the first prisoners (09/07/1949), the island was completely bare, where the prisoners themselves forested and built the island. Strong winds in the winter months, and intolerable heat during the summer months, only added to their already difficult destiny. No one ever escaped.

There are several boats which take visitors on whole-day trips to Goli otok, as well as to the other near-by islands such as Sveti Grgur,the town of Baška on the island of Krk, the islet of Košljun, the Zavratnica cove.

Without any doubt, the most attractive excursion is the one to Goli otok. Numerous buildings, prison cells and workshops have witnessed cruel destiny of convicts on island’s stone surface. Tourist facilities on the island: a small catering service for refreshment after the tour, small train for easier passing of island’s paths, and a souvenir shop.

Sahara is the most famous beach in Lopar for nudists, but don't worry - if you don't want to, you don't have to take off your bathing suit. Nudism is allowed, but not exclusive, and it would certainly be a shame not to visit one of the most beautiful bays on the island of Rab. 🏖

Taking your family on a vacation is mostly a joy, but sometimes it brings into question what is it that you as a family can do, beside swim in the sea, sleep long hours and enjoy good food?

As it turns out, there’s plenty to do - from exploring Archaeological Traces around the island, bicycle, or boat rental to even paddle boarding, the variety of activities that Rab has to offer will satisfy even the toughest family members.
