Ukulele Mana
Sharing the power and spirit of the ‘ukulele from the first luthiers, instruments, and players through to those we know (or may not know) today.
Folks please have a look at this post and incredible uke from my buddy Peter of . Peter was tremendously impacted by Hurricane Helene so this auction is particularly important to him and his business.
This is the gorgeous #100 ukulele from luthier, Peter Marreiros. It’s as great a tenor as we’ve experienced and the woods and inlays make it a true work of art.
Just a week ago Peter’s property and workshop in North Carolina were flooded and mostly destroyed by this horrific hurricane. He has a long road to recovery and our prayers go out to him and everyone suffering losses from this tragedy. Mahalo for your support to one of our communities most gifted luthiers.
Around this time last year Peter contacted us to fully donate a super decked out custom to our auction for victims of the Maui wildfires. Now he finds himself in the middle of a disaster zone struggling to get back to proper living and working conditions. The original price for this amazing and special #100 Cornerstone ukulele was going to be $13,900. We are doing this as an auction in hopes that it gets more than that because all the proceeds are going to Peter who needs our support at this time.
This tenor features an asymmetric double top with sinker cedar and sinker redwood. One of the most stunning cuts from “The Tree” quilted mahogany is used on the back and sides. This is a coveted and rare wood from an amazing tree.
“The Tree” is a famous mahogany tree cut in the Honduras’ Chicibul Jungle in 1965. It was huge with a magnificent spiraling bark and loggers knew it would be amazing and, though it was in a crazy part of the jungle, they went for it. But they couldn’t get it out. It fell down a ravine. Other people came and tried and no one could get it out for 18 years. As you know, it did have amazing figure but it also has more density and properties of rosewood in it’s tone as well. Because of this, and it’s scarcity, it became the most sought after wood for custom guitars for years. Not much of this wood is still around but this amazing set was donated by Jay Howlett for the people of Maui and Peter certainly used it well.
Happy 145th anniversary to the arrival of the Ravenscrag which would lead to an instrument that has had so much impact! The ‘ukulele has brought so much joy to my life not just in its sound and feel, but also its heritage, history, community, and the hanai ohana I have made.
Hawaiian Music Archives and ‘Ukulele Museum Initiative - Honoka’upu, birthplace of the ‘ukulele
Today we celebrate the 145th Anniversary of the arrival of the Ravenscrag to Honolulu Harbor in 1879, which brought 423 passengers to the shores of Hawaii as plantation laborers. In the late 1800s and shortly after fulfilling their contracts, Augusto Dias, Manuel Nunes, and Jose do Espírito Santo all opened shops in the Honoka’upu area, which is now the Chinatown/Downtown area of Honolulu. They repaired stringed instruments for the community, sold accessories, and began a business selling handcrafted “Guitars of All Sizes”.

Lahaina Treescape Restoration Project update: New sprouts atop banyan tree | Maui Now Volunteer arborists and landscapers have banded together as the Lahaina Treescape Restoration Project. The title was coined by arborist Steve Nimz who initiated care and watering for the historic Banyan tree, which is showing signs of recovery with new sprouts high in the canopy.

Definitely an online workshop to checkout! and …can’t go wrong with these two legends.
ʻUkulele Lab presents a workshop by Bryan Tolentino and Herb Ohta Jr. Both Bryan and Herb have been instructing at several music camps and workshops through the years and have 2 award winning recordings together. Many have requested for both of them to give workshops together. So by request, they will be teaching "In A Little Hula Heaven". Herb will start off teaching his style of playing the song melody. Then Bryan follows with "fairy dusting" teaching chord substitutions. rhythms, and musical awareness.
Join us for a learning experience you won't forget. Oh yeah… and some laughter as well.
For those that cannot make it on October 20th, you can still purchase a video copy of the entire workshop for the same price.
