Perry may be most recently known as Father Jun on , but he’s a multitalented artist and activist who has 30 credits to his name and is an incredible shakuhachi flute player. Author Jamie Jo Hoang is the daughter of Vietnamese refugees, and her latest novel May Father, the Panda Killer is a deeply personal story focused on family, intergenerational trauma, responsibility, healing, and more. The Anti-Filipino Watsonville Riots reflected the growing economic and xenophobic fears that people had in the U.S. and especially in agricultural areas of California back in 1930. This week in S04E03, we talk about George Chin, the Chinese Canadian hockey player, who along with his brothers, Albert and Bill, made up one of the most scintillating and unique lines in hockey in the 1940s. George passed away on November 28, 2023, but before then, he made an impact in local, regional, and college hockey at University of Michigan. He and his brothers were even invited to a Toronto Maple Leafs camp where they impressed but ultimately didn’t get signed to play. Hear about George and his impact in ice hockey. S04E02 is out! The Paniolo, AKA, Hawaiian Cowboy became famous throughout the U.S. in the early 1900s, but most people outside of Hawaii now probably don’t remember or recognize the names Ikua Purdy, Eben Low, Archie Ka’au’a, or Jack Low. For a time, rodeos were popular on the islands, and Waimea on the big island was home to a thriving cowboy community. We talk about that and more in this episode. It’s probably no surprise that a lot of people don’t know a whole lot about Asian American History. That’s why the TEAACH Act and other initiatives like it are essential. So for S04E01, we sit down and have a chat with Professor Yoon Pak and Dr. Sharon Lee, two of the key people who helped create the three modules on Asian American History. Based at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, their insights and experience were key in designing the resources for K12 educators in Illinois. We discuss the role of and , how the modules were developed, their hopes for growth, how everyone can get involved and much more.

As 2023 closes and we wrap-up season 3, we want to give thanks for all the great conversations we’ve had this year. We deal with a lot of sensitive topics. So what made us the most upset to research and talk about in season 3? The Cleveland School Massacre in 1989 where a gunman targeted southeast Asian elementary school students S03E02, the citizenship journey of Bhagat Singh Thind S03E08, Data and reports for the Talking About Righting Wrongs Report and the 2023 STAATUS Index S03E30, and the History of Destroying Chinatowns S03E40. Whatever you celebrate… happy holidays! S03E50 is out, and it’s our Season 3 in Review, the final episode of 2023. Which episode topics did we learn the most while researching? Which topics made us angry? Who did we have way too much fun conversing with? Which guests deserve more attention? You get the picture… we talk about the season and you get to fill out an imaginary bingo card to see if we mention some of your favorites too.

What TV shows do we recommend getting in our AAHistory101 Holiday Gift Guide? This was an easy choice… or two choices. Warrior and Kung Fu. just completed season 3, didn’t get renewed by the idiots at HBO, and will be airing on soon! We’re really hoping Warrior gets the support to get picked up for season 4, so watch it when it comes out on Netflix. That said, if you or someone you know love action, drama, and historical fiction, then seasons 1-3 make a great gift and are available on the iTunes Store. just concluded with season 3 as well, and the series is done. But the collection of all three seasons makes a great gift, and we’re not just saying that because we’re fans of who was on our show. There’s great family dynamics and character development. It’s a show for today’s API families.
