Megaprojects in Mumbai include the building of 50 overground flyovers at congested intersections catering to vehicles entering and exiting the city. The primary goal being to serve less than 8% of the population that owns cars. This misguided effort claims to reduce congestion at key junctions with little consideration for street life, residents, and businesses at these locations. Not learning from history which has continually proved that building more roads induces more traffic and congestion, a ‘ponzi’ scheme where supply never catches up to demand. Prioritizing private vehicles in lieu of building a robust transit system only reinforces the autocracy of the minority of residents.
