Last year (a whole lifetime ago) a geoethics writing group was brought together at Middlemarch to write poems in response to Foulden Maar. The day was facilitated by poets Iona Winter and Kirstie McKinnon and geoethicist Kate Dawson on behalf of the Geoethics of Extractive Industries Group which operates between the University of Huddersfield, the University of Otago and The University of Witwatersrand.

Foulden Maar has since been purchased for preservation thanks to the efforts of activists and the local council, but this archive of poems in response to a consideration of the place and politics of Central Otago are still relevant to the conversation around extractive mining.

My piece is called Ensemble: Foulden Maar, and is a long poem presented both as text and as audio, performed with Ōtepoti musician Dane Oates. I am thrilled to finally be able to share this work with you all.

I'm pretty snowed under, so the next episode on Robin Hyde's novel, Wednesday's Children, is going to be delayed a week. Thanks for understanding!

The Deep Reads for season one were all borrowed from Ōtepoti Dunedin's fine libraries: Dunedin Public Libraries and University of Otago Libraries! Use every library you can, I say!

I'm planning to launch the first episode in March. As this is a completely DIY endeavour, I'm holding off on announcing a more specific date until I figure out just how long it is going to take to produce each episode. Audio editing always takes longer than I think it will.

06/02/2022

If you would like to read along, episode one will be about Witi Ihimaera's 1987 novel The Whale Rider.
