Glory Gone Documentary 19/10/2023

Hi friends! If you missed our immersive performance of Glory Gone by Nathan Felix, here is a video of the entire performance, stitched together from rehearsal and performance footage, as well as a video of interviews during the creation process. From working with such a great group of people to put it together within one week, to witnessing such an attentive and engaged audience as our "stage" moved from building to building on the UNM campus, this really was such a rewarding experience, start to finish!

My last couple of weeks of musical adventure included two immersive experiences and a recital of art songs, arias, and broadway musical numbers:

Glory Gone, composed by Nathan Felix, explored the theme of restoring voices and the search for one’s purpose and identity in the face of discrimination. It was premiered on September 14th at the Maxwell Museum of Anthropology in Albuquerque to celebrate National Hispanic Heritage Month.

Transient Landscapes, created by composer, Matthew Burtner and percussionist, Matthew Duvall, featured percussion, keyboards, voice, and field recordings of Alaska's Matanuska Glacier and explored a performative means of remapping climate change into sound. This live performance installation took place on September 16th on the field of St. John's college in Santa Fe.

Lastly, I joined my colleagues and dear friends, Tjett Gerdom and Natasha Stojanovska, on the stage last night for a fun-filled recital in Los Alamos to benefit their Month of Arts and Culture programming in October. Fun fact: we performed in the room Cillian Murphey gave one of his speeches in the film, Oppenheimer. πŸ€“

Looking forward to next month's endeavors! πŸ–€

About to get out "Introspection" on for Transient Landscapes. It's been an immersive kind of weekend!

It has been a pleasure to work with composer, Nathan Felix, and the rest of our crew for his immersive opera, Glory Gone. Putting something like this together has been a unique challenge and altogether rewarding feat, so I hope you'll join us tonight, in and around the Maxwell Museum of Anthropology, for a super different and out-of-the-box performance experience!

OBF 2023 πŸ–€

Started out with a wicked Bach program and an equally wicked group of 15 singers, conducted by the incredible Jos van Veldhoven, then joined forces with the SFYCA and U of O Chorus for a roaring performance of Krzysztof Penderecki's "Credo," conducted by Anna SuΕ‚kowska-MigoΕ„, created some seriously beautiful sounds in Brahms' Shicksalslied, conducted by Eric Jacobson, and ended with yesterday's performance of the philosophical and poetic "A Sea Symphony," composed by Ralph Vaughan Williams and conducted by Gemma New. I also had the honor of singing in the beautiful and touching service/concert in memory of Royce Saltzman, OBF's co-founder and long time executive director, conducted by Kathy Romey, daughter of Royce Saltzman and current OBF Chorus director.

In between, I reconnected with old friends and made some new ones. What a memorable experience!

Photos from Jennifer Perez, Soprano's post 02/07/2023

Just finished up a week of meticulous rehearsal and two amazing Bach concerts with the Oregon Bach Festival, a program of which included the famous Magnificat in D major (on the anniversary of its premiere at the Thomaskirche), the three 1723 audition pieces of Telemann, Graupner, and Bach, for the Thomaskantor position in Leipzig, and the beautiful Dona nobis pacem from Bach's B minor Mass as an encore.

I am feeling overwhelmed with fortune to have had this opportunity to work with such talented colleagues under the direction of the spectacular Dutch conductor and director of the Netherlands Bach Society from the 80s until 2018, Jos van Veldhoven. A well of information and sweet charm, this man! His attention to every detail and nuance draws the text into a fluid relationship with the "little black dots" and invites the notes to dance off the page and become music. It is something beautiful to behold, and I'm beside myself to have been a part of it! πŸ–€

So looking forward to seeing my friends and colleagues in Talbot's Path of Miracles today and to the rest of the festival! 🎢

Hey friends! Time flies, doesn't it? I cannot believe it's already February!

Highlights from last year's many wonderful musical endeavors include: a moving performance of Kim Arnesen's Magnificat with the Zia Singers, an all female choir concert (Polyphony) of all female composers, featuring the premiere of a new work by Jenny Olivia Johnson, Haydn's Creation with Polyphony and Santa Fe Pro Musica, a powerful season ender opera concert with NMPAS, in which I performed the mad scene (sleepwalking scene) from Verdi's Macbeth, and various eclectic concerts with Chatter and the Albuquerque Chamber Soloists. I also had the pleasure of joining the Boulder Bach Festival twice, for their main Summer festival and for their holiday Winter concert.

As for this year, 2023 couldn't have begun with a better prelude than David Lang's "Death Speaks" with Chatter's Late Works series, and coming up soon, a Bach concert and Aaron Alter premiere with NMPAS. I am happy to announce that I will be making a soloist appearance with the New Mexico Gay Men's Chorus in June for Christopher Tin's "To Shiver the Sky," and then heading to Oregon in July to join the Oregon Bach Festival for this Summer's Brahms, Penderecki, Vaughan Williams, and Alberga programs. Last but not least, I'm over the moon ecstatic to be joining the Desert Chorale for their 2023 Winter season.

Looking forward to wonderful new music adventures, and wishing you a beautiful, happy, and productive year! πŸ–€

P.S. I've also recently joined the 95.5 KHFM Classical Public Radio team as an occasional announcer (a fun and different kind of challenge), so stay tuned and you might catch me one of these days! 🎢

06/01/2023

Just a friendly reminder to get your tickets for tonight's Late Works concert if you haven't already. Some of the pieces have changed, but it's still going to be an incredible and moving program, and Esmail's Two Tones and Lang's Death Speaks are still on the menu! Hope to see you there!

27/12/2022

If you haven't gotten the chance to attend one of Chatter's Late Works concerts, I highly recommend that you do. Held on the first Friday of each month at 9pm, these concerts are advertised as providing "night sounds for adventurous listeners," and they do exactly that! I am beyond excited to be joining the Chatter team for next month's concert on Friday, January 6th, for a program that will feature works by Olivier Messiaen, David Lang, Carola Bauckholt, Reena Esmail, and Christopher Cerrone. I'm happy to say that our postponed Lang piece, Death Speaks, will be taking place that night on the program. During this time of unbelievable loss, this heart wrenching, hauntingly beautiful piece that personifies Death and expands on its intricacies seems highly appropriate and timely. I will also join for the lovely Esmail piece, titled Two Tones, for violin, piano, and voice. I hope you will join us for this wonderful program!
