‎The Deeply Rooted Homeschool: Raising Kids in a Post-Christian World on Apple Podcasts 15/08/2022

New episode out today!

This one is a little different than our normal content. We discussed all the lies the enemy is throwing at us in current society and how to navigate raising and discipling kids in the first post-Christian-worldview generation. Our children need to know what they believe and why they believe it so they are armed with truth as they face this world consumed with lies. It’s our jobs as parents and homeschool educators to equip them well. How do we do that? Join us as we discuss resources and materials that have helped us.

There’s a TON of links on the show notes for this one, so make sure if you hear something mentioned you’d like to explore that you check out those notes! They are affiliate links, so they give us a tiny commission if you order through them, which in turn helps us keep ads off our content ;) thanks for being here and listening!

28/05/2021

I felt like I was drowning for the entire decade of my twenties. I was unsure of myself; didn’t have any confidence in my abilities as a wife or mother, and certainly not as a homeschool mom. There was some sort of mold I was supposed to fit into, but I didn’t know how to do that really.

I got married and earned my masters degree while I was 22. I started a job I really loved, but by 23 was pregnant with our oldest and had to start reevaluating what my life was going to look like. By 24, I had my first son and was plopped right into motherhood before most of my college friends had even gotten married. No one around me had babies, and my friends were mostly just out there building careers & living a life of NOT motherhood. We were broke and working crazy jobs to make ends meet and trying to figure out a very colicky, demanding baby. I remember feeling so alone in my stage of life. We were attending a church but not really connected. We didn’t really have people outside of family, and our parents lived at opposite ends of the state from us. We had a second child, turned around and had a surprise third child.... and then, I found myself in the most lonely, depressing time of my life. I had a newborn, a 2 year old and a kindergartener. It was cold, early spring. My husband worked 60+ hours most weeks, 45 minutes away. I was “homeschooling” my kindergartner and I was utterly, depressingly alone. I didn’t have even one friend doing the same type of thing I was doing. Every single friend I knew was working full time and most of them only had one child to my three. I loved my babies so much, but I felt so, so alone.

One day I realized that I couldn’t wait for people to just come waltzing into my life; I had to initiate change if i wanted to see change happen. So I did what anyone would do.... I asked around on Facebook where a local co-op might be. I didn’t get much feedback. No one was there to welcome me with open arms. So I just kept on, by myself. Sitting in a waiting room while my son was in speech therapy, I met a lady and her kids who were clearly homeschoolers and I asked her what sort of homeschooling they did. She was SO open and talked to me about their co-op and their schedule and the day the semester ended I tracked her down in the parking lot and asked her to help me figure out how to homeschool better. She gave me her number right there as both our kids screamed while we stood in the parking lot and told me to come join their co op in the fall. I blindly joined without attending an interest meeting, open house or any sort of anything, completely unaware of what would happen next. I just knew I needed people and she was there, encouraging me and telling me it would all be fine.

As I started through my first year of co op, it was still messy and hard and I had a nursing infant on my hip, and a very obstinate three year old in tow. The people in our co-op loved me well during this hard season. They had patience with my hectic crew. They showed me curriculum and schedules and all things classical homeschool. The moms loved on my kids in big ways. I watched my oldest blossom during the year. But I realized something important as the first year of co-op drew to a close - the other families were there giving me confidence to be myself. To own who I was as a mom and homeschooler. To live in my own skin, to accept and celebrate being different than the mold I was trying to squeeze myself into in my twenties. They accepted me with a baby always in tow and a preschooler throwing tantrums and a smarty pants who always thought he had the answer to all the questions and even when the community days seemed to fall apart on me, I left encouraged and seen.

Our heart for this podcast is that you will have confidence in the fact that you are your child’s best educator, that you are making the right decisions for your family, and that you know you can let go of any molds you’re trying to fit into. Even if you’re not physically present with us, we pray that you know you are not alone in this season. There is a whole group of us here cheering you on. No matter what type of season you find yourself in, you are seen & loved.

This post from Homegrown Learners brings up a great point! Every year we should reevaluate our homeschool’s strengths and weaknesses. Is what we are doing serving our goals and vision for our family? Is our curriculum serving us or are we serving our curriculum? As we come toward the end of another school year, do you need to adjust your approach?

We will be discussing this very thing when we come back for Season 2 of The Deeply Rooted Homeschool! Watch for an episode to drop soon 🎉🎉🎉

Big school changes coming. (Yes, we are still homeschooling 😂).

A couple of months ago I blogged about Grant continuing in Classical Conversations Challenge 3 next year.

Scratch that. 🧐

Because of circumstances out of my control, and then some pretty strong leadings by the Holy Spirit, I will be piecing together several resources for Grant’s junior year.

We are excited about this. After a couple weeks of prayer, talking with my husband and Grant, and a ton of research, I feel a level of excitement and energy for homeschooling that I haven’t felt in a long time.

I will write a blog post to truly organize and explain my thoughts, but here is the big message:

Don’t ever make one method, program, or school, an idol. Always remember that you home educate. You don’t do “Classical Conversations” or whatever program or method you are committed to. When you are a slave to a curriculum it’s a sign to step back and evaluate.

First and foremost - you are a home educator. Every child and every year is different. We homeschool to cater to those differences. If you cannot see yourself homeschooling without a certain program you might want to think again about WHY you homeschool.

Also, in high school, you are NOT homeschooling to get them into college! Yes, it should be a consideration if that is your goal, but first and foremost you are educating a child - a precious soul that you only have for a limited time. The integrity of their education matters.

I believe that if the Holy Spirit guides you, then everything will be just fine. ♥️😊

Be on the lookout for that blog post, ok?

And have a blessed Easter weekend!!

Read-Aloud Revival with Sarah Mackenzie telling us what we’ve been trying to say all along 👏🏼 if we could tell you one thing, it’s definitely this!

Sometimes, I feel like quitting.⁣

Quitting homeschool is what I'm talking about, though I also sometimes feel like quitting other important things in my life. Laundry, for example. Difficult people. Feeding kids every ding-dong day.⁣

It seems to me that all the most important things in life make us weary from time to time, and right now, a lot of us are w-e-a-r-y.⁣

So perhaps we need the reminder: it's just weariness. Nothing out of the ordinary. Nothing that a little "peace that surpasses all understanding" can't remedy.⁣

GK Chesterton said that *anything worth doing is worth doing badly*, and what he meant was that if something is worth doing in the first place, it's worth doing even if you currently aren't doing a great job at it.⁣

Prayer, let's say. Worth doing, even if you aren't all that "good" at it, right?⁣

Feeding your kids, even if you aren't a gourmet chef.⁣

Laundry, even if you forget to separate the lights and darks. (Ok, I never do that, actually. 🤷🏼‍♀️)⁣

And homeschooling, even on your worst days.⁣

Because there is no one else on earth- no, not one- who loves your kids more than you do. Who wants to see them succeed more than you. Who is willing to lay down their life for your child...⁣
⁣..like you are doing today, in fact, as you sit down, weary in your bones, and haul out the math book, the read-aloud, the spelling list, the crock pot.⁣

It's all worth doing, no matter how well or poorly you feel about it.⁣

The secret, of course, is the odds are extremely good that you’re better at homeschooling than you think you are, anyway.⁣

So. I was planning on sending you a whole different note today, but at the last minute, I decided to tell you this, instead:⁣

Sometimes I feel like quitting. I bet you do too. But what you are doing matters a lot, and it's worth doing. So don't quit.⁣

I'm rooting for you. 🥰

Good Monday morning friends! So glad to be back with a new episode for you guys this morning!

Have you ever wondered if it’s going to be worth it in the end? Are my kids going to like this way of life? Homeschooling your kids is so much bigger than just giving them an education from home. In this episode, we talk to Kami’s dad, Chris Ward. He tells us the story of how the Ward family started homeschooling after public school, and how eventually home school became a critical piece of their family culture and legacy. This episode is challenging and encouraging for families currently homeschooling, as it reminds us to look at the bigger picture of WHY we are homeschooling. Listen in and be encouraged!
