Wonky Spoons

Hand crafted wooden spoons

Photos from Wonky Spoons's post 20/07/2024

Jeff's latest creation - this is a deep, tasting spoon crafted from spelted English Beech. Spelting is the result of a fungus that infects the wood at 20% moisture; once dry, the fungus is dead leaving this intricate pattern.
This has been made from the only piece of beech Jeff has so is one-of-a-kind. A unique gift or addition to your kitchen. $70.

And that, ladies and gentlemen, is the end of that!

Currently working on a 450mm long River Rimu long handled ladle. The “bump” at the end of the bowl will be where a 4 twined twist will start and wend its way down the handle. 4 hours have gone into this…..so far

Jeff has worked long and hard on this particular olive spoon - its creation caused many "oh @ #$%" moments and may have been threatened with flames, but finally, here it is!

27/11/2023

Jeff's olive spoons have proved a hit for a unique gift. Not only useful for removing olives from a jar but also gherkins. What else would you use you spoon for?
Thanks to Helene Hall of Eightyeightputiki gallery for this idea. Head on down to the gallery for olive spoons and much more.

15/11/2023

We are very proud that Eightyeightputiki stock Jeff's spoons and other wonky creations. Helene took this photo of an olive spoon for her page and we wanted to share it here. Great Christmas or Wedding gift idea.

It is going to be a fabulous spring day to visit Whanganui River Markets tomorrow. We will have some spatulas, spurtles and peelers at our Home Sweet Home stall - these will make a great gift for a foodie Dad, a porridge loving Dad or a Dad that likes to eat oranges!

Olive spoon made from olive wood! What a cool and original gift idea. Just add olives!

The grain on these two spatulas is amazing. Jeff is playing with different types of wood - can you guess where this wood comes from?
CLUE - it is not a native timber.

Work in progress.

Twin Kilns Gallery - unique space and art, Artists Open Studios

There will be nine artists exhibiting at Twin Kilns Gallery, 18A Georgetti Road, Bastia Hill for Artists Open Studios, as well as a portrait artist doing 5-to-10-minute sketches.
It is well worth visiting for both the art and the building which owner and furniture maker Greg Betts, has restored from an almost derelict Wanganui Brick Works into a fascinating, multi-level complex, full of light and with an evocative ambiance. It is an opportunity to wander through the many spaces, taking in the architecture, looking at the art and talking with the artists.
Featured artist is Michelle Colson, a contemporary abstract painter. After a career in finance, Michelle completed an Honours degree in Media Arts. In the last few years, she has travelled extensively around New Zealand while building up a body of work. Greg invited her to join the group of artists exhibiting at the gallery.
She has previously exhibited at the Fine Art Gallery and Space Gallery as well at galleries outside of Whanganui. She has also been involved in Artists Open Studios several times.
While her work is described as abstract, Michelle says, “My focus is process orientated – how the materials work and relate to each other. For me the emphasis is on earthy colours and form and the relationships on the canvas. They are like a performance which has been captured in some way.” She has a good selection of small pieces and large canvases.
Greg has a range of chairs, bar stools and tables made from a variety of woods including rimu, bog kauri, rewa rewa and elm. They are both striking and beautifully hand made, and the stave chairs are very comfortable. (A stave comes from a piece of wood curved when making wooden barrels)
Ahu Te Ua trained as a graphic designer and has done illustration work as well as caricatures and cartoons, and once was described as “New Zealand Hogarth.” He will be offering 5 to 10 minutes portraits for $20 and is happy to receive commissions.
The other artists are:
• David Taylor – abstract watercolours
• Ken Sando – contemporary artist
• Raewyne Green – painter and egg maker
• Tom Turner – drawing, painting, sculpture
• Mark Gibb – woodturner
• Jack Michalski, and
• Chloe O’Leary – wild life sketches.
The Gallery is a short drive off Georgetti Road and there is plenty of parking on the premises.

We have decided to do a silent auction for this spoon - 100% of the proceeds will go to the East Coast recovery fund.
Bidding begins at $100 - please comment your bid or send it as a message if you'd prefer to do this more anonymously. Bidding ends at 12pm this Thursday 23rd February. The highest bidder gets the spoon. The spoon has been lovingly handcrafted by Jeff from New Guinea Walnut. These pictures don't do it justice - this is a one off.
If you prefer to give a smaller donation, please do so directly through Stuff or another organisation gathering funds.
Please share this post.

Trying my hand at videoing Jeff oiling a spoon. Pity I don't know how to edit the video! It has sound.

Finished and oiled with Tung Oil.
This 40 cm, deep bowl, twisty, wonky spoon has been crafted from a piece of New Guinea Walnut given to me by the family of the gentleman who "snuck" it into NZ.
The grain is stunning.

New Guinea Walnut.
I am going to follow the grain to create the handle.

Jeff is very grateful that people so generously gift him wood, especially when it is something a bit different. This is Papua New Guinean Walnut. What an incredible grain. Gifted back to the family.
