Sally's Leathercraft Projects
A page to share my leather craft projects
Found the pattern for this little number online. I thought it was a neat idea for people who don't like carrying wallets to work but still need to carry a card, licence and some cash securely. Despite not having some of the right tools, I am pretty happy with the outcome. I enjoyed this public holiday project trying out kangaroo leather for the first time.
It's taken me a long time to have the confidence to incorporate hair-on-hide into my leatherwork, but I can see a lot more of it in my future. This is my first crack and I am pretty happy with the result. Now to play with some other projects!
I never thought I was going to finish this belt, I had so much trouble trying to find the rings that were the right specifications (too thick, not big enough in diameter). In the end my fiancée made them at his work - which makes this project is a bit more meaningful for me.
The belt is too long for what I need, so I'll probably have another go at back-braiding to make a neater job of it in the near future. Other than that, I am pretty happy with this one.
Finally have a full belt braided - now I just need to find two rings to secure with back braid. :-) This was challenging and fun!
Looks like I need more length in my strands! This was 1.25m it will be lucky to be about 60cms when finished. 😁
This has been my Easter Weekend project.
The bottom one is the first attempt and it took 3-4 hours of redo after redo - and even then it turned out pretty rough.
The top one took about an hour and two redos but I am very happy with how this one turned out. Next step is a full length belt! Wish me luck :-)
Looking forward to working with some off cut hair-on-hide leather I’ve purchased today. A few ideas floating in my mind but haven’t settled on what to ‘build’ yet.
One of our neighbours popped down on Saturday (usually it's a marathon talk fest with the boss) but this time he wanted to see me! Asked for "something to hold my phone on my belt."
Whipped this up on Sunday arvo and left it as his door as he wasn't home. He called in this morning to show me that it was "spot on." I played with a magnetic close on this one - rather than a press stud - which I think really works well.
Slow leather craft week this week as my real work got in the road🙊
This weeks efforts were:
✅ Coasters
✅ Coin purse
✅ Key ring
✅ Ammo wallet (custom order)
Wonder what inspiration will come tomorrow? 😁
This is an attempt to make a unisex minimalist wallet. It has a drivers licence slot, a bulk card or note pouch, and a coin pocket.
Think I will move the coin pocket to the other side on this next one. Keen to hear your thoughts on where it should be positioned....let me know in the comments.
Even after two short months leather crafting, I seem to acquired quite a large collection of offcuts. I'm trying to do little projects (like earrings and cord holders) to utilise it.
Love to hear any ideas you might have that will help me reduce the scrap box?
Found this cute little pattern online last night and made it tonight.
It was nice to do something quick, practical and simple.
Look at the edge on that! That is a leather crafters dream right there.
Some people waste a lot of leather to cut the perfect parts for their projects, but I love the marks.
I think they provide character. You can even see part of a brand on the right-hand side of this item on this one.
This is a phone purse design that I've been dabbling with for a friend.
One side has slots for 4 cards, the other side has a pocket for a phone and there is enough room in the middle for a phone charger or a couple of keys.
I think this design could be a bit longer in the zip, and I would change the way I did the internal bits, but it's still quite a functional piece.
Keen to hear your ideas about what makes a functional phone purse?
This weeks evening projects are brought to you by "I should've paid more attention in home economics" (I'm referring to zips) 😂
I do love the two-tone. But I particularly love the green and brown! This one is off to my friend Jess up north to accompany her on a work trip next month.
The boxy pouch will most likely end up in my leather kit to keep my threads, needles etc. all together. I'll use softer leather when I make this one next, which should improve its appearance.
And the prize for the cutest leatherwork project so far goes to this little number! 🥰 It's little coin purse - made from a tiny scaled down pattern of the totes I have been making. Cute but VERY fiddly!
After I posted the picture (on my personal page) of the bi-fold card wallet I did for my former boss, a friend reached out to request the same wallet but with DATE NIGHT stamped in it.
She'd seen the idea online and wanted one for her husband. She plans to give the wallet to her husband on his birthday with a pre-paid Visa card included so that they can have adult time outside of being busy parents.
I loved the idea - so was only too happy to help.
This project would have to be the most frustrating yet! If you have any hints, tips or ideas about installing zips around corners... I am all ears!
