EMERGENCY CONTRACEPTIVES- What you need to know about I-Pills
Overview
Birth control is any method or device used to prevent and control the frequency of pregnancies. It has been in existence since ancient times but more effective and safer methods became available in the 20th century. Birth control methods are widely used although some cultures limit or discourage their access because they consider them morally or religiously wrong.
Birth control is an individual choice and most women are at the center of this matter. Most of the birth control methods are made or designed for women. Some of these are the Intrauterine Device (IUD), injectables, vaginal ring, pills, and many other natural, barrier, or procedural methods of birth control.
As there are diverse forms of birth control, for this article the writer will like to focus on emergency contraceptives which are usually pills.
Emergency contraceptives pill (ECP) also known as Morning-after-pill or popularly known here in Sierra Leone as I-Pill is a medication used to disrupt or delay ovulation or fertilization which must happen for pregnancy to occur. Ovulation is the release of eggs from the ovaries.
Why take I-Pill?
I-Pill usually comes in a pack of one or two tablets to be taken within 72 hours after having unprotected s*x in order to prevent unwanted pregnancies. I-Pill should be taken only in a case of an emergency like in the case of contraceptive failures such as condom bursting or leaking, forgetting to take your daily contraceptive pills, or in cases of unplanned or forced s*x (r**e).
However, today I-Pill is being used or rather misused by many women as a primary method of prevention instead of a backup plan, it is also gaining popularity amongst teenagers and young women. Since I-Pill is an over the counter drug, nobody needs a prescription to get it so it is highly accessible which is a concern because it can encourage irresponsible s*xual behavior which in turn increases the risk of unintended pregnancies and s*xually transmitted diseases (STDs) such as HIV, Hepatitis B, human papillomavirus (which causes cervical cancer), Herpes, Chlamydia, etc. The availability and massive publicity of I-Pill have resulted in women nowadays using it multiple times a month or as a replacement for other contraceptive methods. According to the manufacturers, I-Pill is only safe and is recommended to be used by women between the ages of 25 and 45. This pill can be really dangerous for women younger than 25.
Some facts about I-Pill
I-Pill is not an abortion pill, it stops pregnancy but cannot terminate it. Therefore, it is not effective if a woman is already pregnant.
The I-Pill is meant for emergency contraception, it cannot be used as a regular birth control method and is quite unhealthy if taken more than twice a month
If you are on long-term medication for any ailment, consult your doctor before taking the I-Pill
The I-Pill is a hormonal pill and its long-time usage can lead to severe menstrual problems or even ovarian damage
Effects of I-Pill on a developing reproductive system
Changes in menstruation- many women start experiencing spotting after using I-Pill. Spotting is when you see some amount of blood when it's not yet time for you to see your period. Other women notice heavy bleeding. I-Pill can cause a drastic change in a woman’s period, some women have reported having experienced a heavier than usual period, some about the color and delay of their period. This is because I-Pill is hormonal so it tends to cause a hormonal imbalance.
Reproductive damage- the continual use of I-Pill may lead to reproductive organ damage. I-Pill is to be taken on rare emergency cases, not as a regular birth control method. The safest way to prevent pregnancy is to get a long-term reversible birth control plan to avoid the consumption of I-Pills.
Mood swings- some women have reported usually not being able to regulate their feelings, they have reported having extreme mood swings after taking the pill. Sometimes these feelings of depression or anxiety which are caused by the hormonal imbalance linger for long.
Weight gain- some women gain weight just like they would if it’s regular birth control. This weight gain experience can be temporal as weight usually even out after the hormones are balanced.
Other side effects are- Nausea, headaches, breast tenderness, fatigue, and abdominal pain.
Expert’s Advice for women
For women who do not want to be on a regular birth control method, normalize using condoms. Ask your men to use condoms as this does not just save you from unplanned pregnancies but also from STDs
Abstaining from s*x is 100% effective for the prevention of pregnancies and STDs. Consider this option if you are a teenager to minimize your risks of prolonging medical complications
Study and understand your menstrual circle well. Download apps like “Flo” to help you track your period. That way you can predict when you will ovulate (period of fertilization of the egg) which is usually when you have the highest chance of getting pregnant. During this period, it is advisable to abstain from s*x or use a condom.
Do not take I-Pill more than twice a month

Capture the moment...don’t let it slide ❤️🦋
Social media is one of the reasons why there’s an increase in depression amongst young people.
Don’t be fooled by what you see here, so many act like they’re happy but in reality they are not. They give you the impressions of perfect relationships, perfect lives but they’ll never share the ugly sides.
So focus on your life, do what makes you truly happy and nurture yourself to be better on your own terms and timeline.
Stay positive always xoxo
Trusting myself and believing in my growth process.
Slowly but surely at God’s time.

Sickle cell disease (SCD) is a group of blood disorders typically inherited from a person's parents. The most common type is known as sickle cell anaemia (SS). It results in an abnormality in the oxygen-carrying protein haemoglobin found in red blood cells. This leads to a rigid, sickle-like shape under certain circumstances. Problems in sickle cell disease typically begin around 5 to 6 months of age. (Wikipedia).
Sickle Cell is dangerous. Let us prevent the next generation from its pain and danger to life.
Join us on Monday 3rd May 2021 at 8pm as we discuss about Sickle Cell and relationships.

SIERRA LEONE 🇸🇱 @60💎
“I pledge my love and loyalty to my country Sierra Leone “
But we are now more loyal to politicians and political parties. We’re now more loyal to ourselves and our tribesmen. Our land has been betrayed 😌
“I vow to serve her faithfully at all times”
But people no longer take pride in faithfully serving our land. We now leave for greener pastures and sometimes never return. We’ve left our land to be barren. The fruits our land now bears are self centered and greedy. They forget that serving our land faithfully will bring glory to us all.
“I promise to defend her honor and good name”
Unfortunately, the honor and good name our land once had has been replaced by hardship and pity. Our once bright nation has been replaced with a gloomy one. Our excellence has diminished.
“Always work for her unity, peace, freedom and prosperity”
But I don’t see unity from where I stand, Our peace is threatened by our division, our freedom is circumstantial and our prosperity is far fetched because of our lack of commitment to serve our land as we should, as She deserves.
“And put her interest above all else”
But Self interests, family interests, political parties interests, tribal interests, regional interests are all we now portray. The interest of our land no longer holds value. Nationalism is now only a concept with no effect. Our loyalty to our land has shifted.
“So help me God“
We’re a religious nation but we don’t have God in our hearts. We claim to be Muslims and Christians but we don’t follow the teachings of our Holy Prophets. We live like we will never die and we forget that our deeds are counted.
“So help me God”
May God help us fulfill our pledge to our BELOVED NATION. May we always thing about Sierra Leone first🙏🏽
HAPPY INDEPENDENCE DAY SIERRA LEONE 🇸🇱🇸🇱🇸🇱🇸🇱🇸🇱🇸🇱

*BACK IN TIME WHEN NEWS WAS MOSTLY NOT NEW*- before the inception of smart phones and social media.
Growing up in compounds (yards) where we all shared food because the neighbors will literally be peeking into each other’s pots to see what they are cooking 😂 If you mistake cook beef u nr share na wahala for da week dae. But that’s not the main reason, we shared food back then because we were taught that sharing is caring. We were taught that you don’t have to have enough to share. We shared because we knew others also needed to survive. We shared because we believed in good deeds.
It was such an amazing moment that allowed us time to play, time to actually play with dirt and sweat. Time to laugh from deep down our guts, time to give the brightest smiles and the purest look.
Back then we learnt to love our own and others, sharing in every emotion. Yours is mine and mine is yours.
Back then we cared more, we appreciated more, we loved more, we were more honest and sincere. Loyalty and faithfulness were seen as virtues.
Back then we looked forward to tales told by the elders, every story had a moral lesson.
Back then we celebrate with a pure heart, anybody way me mama nr lek d posin dae know😁😁😁
Back then we didn’t care about how fast others’ lives were moving, we didn’t care about who’s the happiest, who’s the most successful or who’s the richest.
Back then we hardly get fake news, we didn’t have to live in fear. We trusted and we believed in our future.
Back then we don’t try to impress people, we had contentment. We were taught to be satisfied and work righteously to gain better.
I love back then, back then made most of us into better humans.
Advanced technology has taken away a lot, we live but we’re not really living.
We talk, but we’re not really talking.
We laugh 😆 but we’re not really laughing
We cry with you but we’re not really crying.
We play but we’re not really playing.
The online and in-person persona 🤦♀️, searching for validation from the wrong places and people.
It’s so easy to be unfaithful, so easy to lie and be deceitful, so easy to bring others down, life seems so easy but yet so complicated.
This new era has taken away our traditions, our tribes, our native identity.
This new era has built glass walls and boundaries and barriers
This new era portrays humanity but destroys humanity.
This new era cares less for others and more for thy self.
This new era teaches self love and selfishness, it endorses vices instead of virtues
What seemed normal back then is now abnormal.
The advancement of technology has brought us together in one house, where every man is for himself.
I miss BACK THEN
