In Kargil, water is a major issue, like rest of Ladakh.
In this highland desert, glacial melts, and streams and springs created by them are the main source of water.
In the frigid winter months, water pipelines freeze.
While tankers are provided in many areas, in the heart of the city, where there are some functional handpumps, women walk to down to fetch drinking water.
The pump is black because it's set on fire to melt frozen water.
However they can't wash clothes with precious driving water. Thet go to river Suru that flows through Kargil to wash clothes, even when the river is frozen. Women carry stoves with them to warm the water to use.

If you get water from a tap, be thankful and don't waste it.

And annadatas are annadatas at the end of the day. A group of gentlemen from Moga invited me to have dinner with them, one of the yummiest meals I've ever had.

That's the Punjabi spirit I would say, they are protesting, and yet they are hospitable, treating us as guests, while we should have considered them our guests.

Instead, their way was blocked and force was used, and yet their spirit is unaffected.
