Watermelon + Lemonade = Nothing better on a hot summer day!
💦 Here’s a fun fact: watermelon is 92% water – which means it can help keep you hydrated AND feeling full between meals. It also can aid in digestion.
💚 Its high water content means it’s lower in calories – but even so, it packs some surprising nutrition. In addition to containing vitamin C, it has carotenoids that convert to vitamin A, as well as lycopene, which has a long list of potential health benefits.

..and the Herb of the year is...
https://bit.ly/2Siyh2P
Something that could help you with the developing the right mind set to help with eating better.
In the last 40 days, meditation has changed my life.
Some of you already know the backstory:
The start of this year sucked, and for no good reason.
I turned 40, and on the outside, everything was great.
Great business, great friends, beautiful fiancé, thriving daughter, a home surrounded by nature.
But something was missing.
It had been missing for a while and I couldn’t put my finger on it.
I did an activity where I was asked to look at a list of 50 positive emotions down one side of a page, and 50 negative emotions down the other side.
My job was to circle the emotions I felt most often, then identify my top three.
The results?
#1. Stress.
#2. Frustration.
#3. Anxiety.
(The next seven weren’t that much better).
Now, some context may be useful if by change you’re reading this yet don’t know me very well. I’m not a hardcore workaholic, I haven’t been drunk in ages, I eat a clean diet and stick to one coffee a day (with added fat to mitigate any caffeine spike) and from a business and family perspective, we’re comfortable.
How could those be my most common emotions?
I’d won the human lottery!
I was living a life that the majority of people on the planet might dream of.
Weeks roll by, as they do, and there I am one morning walking in the garden with my daughter Mila and she pointed at my eyes.
In her limited vocabulary she strung a few words together that just broke me.
“Sad. Daddy Sad.”
Snap.
This wasn’t OK.
Something fundamental had to change.
With everything else around me being fine, there weren’t many places left to look.
I’d dabbled with meditation for 2 decades and every time I did it, I felt good, but I never stuck with it which I always thought was odd.
The ‘feels good, don’t do it’ formula didn’t make sense.
And, I've done enough personal development seminars to make Tony Robins blush, yet here I was.
One of my clients is a mediation teacher, and we were set to do some work together however, thankfully, the conversation quickly shifted to meditation, and my own failed attempts.
Over a cuppa he explained (I'm paraphrasing)...
“The type of meditation I teach doesn’t require you to be a monk, you don’t need to sit cross legged or hide in a dark quiet room for hours a day. In fact the idea is not detach from life at all, or give up coffee or meat or s*x or any of that stuff.”
It’s a technique for people actively expressing themselves in the world and making a dent in the universe (he already had me at meat and s*x, but it was a nice touch). Transcending the thinking mind every day helps us to release tension, stress and fatigue while allowing our nervous system to come back to our natural state of stillness and calm.
The kicker for entrepreneurs (and anyone involved in solving complex problems) is that when your mind is still, it creates room for a higher calibre of ideas, insight and inspiration to rise to our awareness.
Step 1 is to establish ourselves in stillness, in consciousness twice a day for 20 minutes.
Step 2 is to go out in the world and perform inspired action."
The conversation continued and he correctly predicted that I wasn’t actually ’sad’ as my daughter suggested. I’d just accumulated more stress over the years than my body had been able to process. I thought back to my previous two decades in business, and despite plenty of holidays and trips and undeniable good times, I can’t remember feeling like I’d ever really stopped.
As stress had accumulated in my nervous system, it had got to the point where I’d lost my ability to feel the delicate, subtle emotions like awe, joy and grace. The only stuff that registered was the heavy, dense stuff. It’s like I'd acclimatised to a freshly painted room. I may have been able to tolerate the paint, but I certainly wasn’t going to be smelling any roses.
So I asked him for some of his magic beans, and a few weeks later he joined me at my home and introduced me to the technique of ‘Vedic Meditation’.
That was 40 days ago.
Every day since then, I’ve sat in a chair for 20min in the morning, and again in the afternoon while repeating a simple mantra silently in my head.
Like a metronome, morning and afternoon. That’s it.
No Voodoo. No praying to the spaghetti monster in the sky.
Sometimes I’m alone. Sometimes Mila is climbing over me and Sarah is in the background making a ruckus.
None of that is an obstacle.
It’s been interesting to discover that the world doesn’t need to be still around me for me to be still.
So, I’m 40 days in and I can’t imagine my life without it.
I haven’t felt stress, frustration or anxiety since day 3.
No joke. No exaggeration. Just gone. Evaporated.
And it’s not like there’s been a shortage of opportunity.
I live a full life, it’s just my nervous system isn’t reacting to things in the same way.
What’s been so remarkable is, as the heavy emotions have dissolved, what’s replaced them (or perhaps they were always there but I could’t feel them) have been the number of moments of just joy - pure, unadulterated joy. And usually for no good reason.
I don’t quite know how to articulate this without sounding like a cosmic cookie, but it’s infused my life with a sort of grace, a charm.
It’s very hard to put into words yet it’s as real as the table I’m typing on.
A few weeks ago I was once again hanging out with Mila in our garden and, with that beautiful beaming smile of hers, she looked up at me, pointed at my eyes and said,
“Happy. Daddy happy."
I can’t describe what that felt like.
Tears poured, yet her smile didn’t waver.
It’s like everything in my life has turned itself ‘on'.
I can’t remember feeling this calm, or creative in my life.
I know very well that this is making me sound rather ‘born again’ and I’m cool with that.
I’d been taking it all a bit too seriously.
The fact of the matter is I’m happy, and it feels good to share it.
I’m very thankful to Nicho for introducing me to a technique that was right for me, and it seems the times we’re in.
Now, I’m really curious about you!
Do you meditate?
Dabbled?
Struggled?
Much Love.

Food for thought.. yeah I know.. its a pun, kind of :D
These tips come from ’s Functional Medicine nutritionist, Lisa Dreher.
Eat more dark leafy green vegetables:
These veggies are packed with antioxidants and phytonutrients that protect cells and DNA from damage. They are rich in fiber, folate, carotenoids, vitamins C and K, iron and calcium. They help support the immune system and reduce inflammation throughout the body. Try adding more arugula, watercress, spinach & dark lettuces to your meals.
Eliminate sugar, gluten & dairy:
Of all foods and food additives, our patients see the greatest improvement in their symptoms when they remove sugar, gluten & dairy from the diet. These are difficult to digest and can cause inflammation, especially within the gut. And since 80 percent of the immune system is found in your gut, it is best to remove these ingredients completely for a period of time and see how you feel.
Eat high omega-3, low-mercury fish 2 to 3 times a week:
Many autoimmune conditions are characterized by high levels of inflammatory substances known as cytokines. Eating more omega-3 fatty acids from fish (like wild Alaskan salmon and sardines) can help regulate these cytokines and reduce inflammation.
Drink bone broth:
Bone broth has been used in cultures around the world for centuries, and now science is uncovering the myriad of benefits. It is rich in collagen (the main component of connective tissue), gelatin (which is anti-inflammatory and helps protect the gut lining from harmful microbes), glutamine (which protects against and can help reverse leaky gut – a key factor in the development of autoimmune disease), proline-rich peptides (needed for proper collagen structure) and several vitamins and minerals.
Add turmeric and black pepper to your cooking:
Ample research shows the potent anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects of turmeric. Specifically, curcumin is the constituent in turmeric that provides its deep yellow color and medicinal qualities. Curcumin inhibits inflammatory cytokines. We recommend you use turmeric as it has been used traditionally – in cooking!

When I bake.. I use real organic eggs.
Although I don’t eat eggs for breakfast often and usually make a “flax egg” for baking…
When I do buy eggs, I choose them carefully.
Here are my egg buying tips:
✔️ Choose pasture-raised organic eggs, preferably local. Organic pastured eggs come from hens that forage naturally on a pasture, eating a natural diet of grass, bugs, worms. This produces more nutritious eggs with up to twice as much vitamin E and omega-3 fatty acids, and a healthier ratio of omega-6 to omega-3 fatty acids.
✔️ Ignore labels “Cage-Free” and “Natural” because these don’t mean much. “Cage-Free” on eggs means the chickens they come from weren’t in a cage, but it doesn’t mean they spent any time outside. These chickens likely lived crammed together inside large warehouses or barns, and may not have had any access to the outdoors.
✔️ Look for the Certified Humane label. Pasture-raised eggs that also carry the Certified Humane label are third-party certified that each hen has a minimum of 108 square feet of space outdoors year-round, on grassy fields, with fixed or mobile housing for sleeping and protection.

P.S. A “Flax Egg” as a good vegan option that works well in most baking recipes. Simply mix together 1 tablespoon organic ground flaxseed with 3 tablespoons water per egg. Let it sit for 15 minutes to thicken before using.
Tea anyone?
Read all about how to choose tea at the link in the comments below!
Two quick tips:
1. Choose organic: Most tea is not washed before it is put into bags, which means if the tea was sprayed with pesticides, those pesticides go directly into your cup. Many brands of nonorganic tea have been tested and shown to have high pesticide levels. Imagine what happens when pesticide-laden tea is steeped in boiling water. This is why it is important to choose organic tea, which is regulated to prohibit the use of synthetic pesticides, many of which are known carcinogens and developmental toxins.
2. Avoid tea made with “natural flavors” instead of real herbs and spices. Flavors are used to trick consumers into thinking they are buying better, cleaner ingredients; however, companies are just covering up the inferior taste and low quality of their tea.
Choose a certified organic brand of tea and check the ingredient list on the package to see if there are any added flavors or other ingredients such as sweeteners. Personally I love Rishi Tea and Numi Organic Tea.

Calories are not all the same it would seem..
In my younger days I always checked the calories and fat grams on my food. I believed that as long as I didn’t eat too many of those, I wouldn’t gain weight - but I’ve since learned there is WAY more to it than that. I don’t count calories on a regular basis and you shouldn’t have to either if you start reading ingredient lists!
Not all calories are equal.
For example, I can eat one Tw***ie loaded with GMOs, high fructose corn syrup, artificial colors, polysorbate 60, and cellulose gum – and it will be 140 calories.
On the other hand, I can choose to eat a large pear full of fiber, phytonutrients, copper, vitamins C and K, and still ingest about 140 calories.
The better choice is obvious and that’s because your body treats calories differently, depending on the source.
That’s why knowing what is in your food is KEY!
In the first chapter of Food Babe Kitchen I share my Three-Question Detox technique for shopping for the best food. All you need to do is ask yourself these three questions about any food you’re going to eat:
1. What are the ingredients?
2. Are these ingredients nutritious?
3. Where do these ingredients come from?
I break down how to answer each question in this chapter. Read an excerpt in the comments below!
Giving your body the nutrients it needs to thrive will help your weight and make you feel healthy and vibrant!
