In the Shenandoah after Gettysburg
Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Page County, Virginia — Originally built in 1851 and located just off U.S. Route 211 below Thornton Gap in the Blue Ridge Mountains and Shenandoah National Park, this area around the chapel hosted the Confederate camps of General Robert E. Rodes’ Division on July 25, 1863. With the stream Pass Run flowing right next to it, the troops of Edward “Allegheny” Johnson’s Division also established camps nearby. A few weeks after the great campaign and struggle in Pennsylvania, General Richard Ewell’s Corps had withdrawn to the Page Valley to rest.
Before marching east to cross over Thornton Gap and into Rappahannock County, several men from Rodes’ and Johnson’s Divisions were left in Luray to be cared for by private citizens. These were recent casualties from both Gettysburg and a battle fought at Wapping Heights (Manassas Gap) on July 23. Following the movements here, the armies would later engage in the Bristoe Campaign.
