Pirate Nurse Update: Mary Ann McMahon Whiteman, Class of 1965 BSN
Immediately after graduation, Mary Ann worked at Mountainside Hospital in Montclair, NJ. She
then enjoyed teaching as an Adjunct Instructor at William Paterson University. She moved on
to focus her nursing career at Community Health Care of North Jersey, a certified home health
agency. While there, she served as supervisor and then Vice President and Director of Health
Services. Mary Ann developed programs for vulnerable populations. She served as Chairperson
of the Essex County Boarding Home Reform Advisory Board, authoring training modules for the
care of elderly and mentally ill in boarding homes, as well as jointly developing legislative
recommendations for improvement in care of boarding home residents. She was appointed to
the New Jersey State Boarding Home Advisory Council in the New Jersey Department of Human
Services.
Mary Ann continued her education at Rutgers University in Newark, earning her Masters in
Public Administration, with concentration in Health Administration. She is a member of Pi
Alpha Alpha, the National Honor Society for Public Administration and is a Past President of the
New Jersey Chapter of the American Society for Public Administration.
In 1989, Mary Ann began a new phase of her career working with the State of New Jersey to
implement the Catastrophic Illness in Children Relief Fund. She served as the first Executive
Director of the Commission, which administers this unique program to provide financial relief to
families with overwhelming medical expenses for a child’s illness. Working with several state
departments and the Office of the Governor, staff of the Commission provided oversight to this
dedicated Fund, worked with families on applications for assistance, negotiated discounts from
providers of children’s health care and designed multimedia programs to inform the public of
the help available.
When it was time to retire from full time work, Mary Ann’s interest in her earlier love of home
care nursing drew her to the Visiting Nurse Association of Somerset Hills. She developed and
facilitated a structured online series of education modules for staff new to home care.
Additional modules for staff new to hospice care and supervision were completed. Mary Ann
presented a workshop on this series at the Annual Meeting of the National Association for
Home Care and Hospice in Los Angeles. Working with senior managers and Board of Director
volunteers, she also served as Project Coordinator for the CHAP Self-Study team, ensuring an
online interim application for reaccreditation was completed.
Mary Ann raised three children in New Jersey and now enjoys time with her four grandchildren.
