Emilee is shouting: Make sure the deaf get heard — and helped — early Emilee Segura was born deaf, but early intervention allowed her to hear, and speak, as well as anyone; she’s made it her life’s work to use her story to tell others what is possible.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY to my beach loving husband! I am so incredibly grateful for him. I feel so lucky that I found Jonathan and he was willing to learn ASL for me, dive into deaf culture, become friends with my deaf friends, is patient when I can’t hear him, supports and encourages me with my career goals, and so much more. I love you Jonathan 🤟🏻🤟🏻🤟🏻

answering a common question about why I only have one cochlear implant!
as I talk about why I think most kids who aren’t wearing their hearing devices usually have a good reason why. Please share with a parent who has a deaf or hard of hearing child with hearing devices 🤟🏻
Thank you all for your support so far! I’m excited to continue to spread awareness, educate, and entertain with deaf related content. The support on all my pages has been amazing, ily! 🤟🏽🤟🏽🤟🏽
This is what I looked like right after my yearly audiology appointment. It was exhausting and scary. I want to take a moment to share my experiences about audiology appointments. I will share some tips at the end!
I’ve never liked audiology appointments. I dreaded them growing up. Every time I got a new map everything sounded loud and different. I hated it. It usually took my brain 1-3 days to adjust before everything sounded “normal” again. I was usually always exhausted at the end of the appointment because of all the testing and changes.
I know the importance of these appointments, and I’m grateful for the new maps and how they help me hear better. I notice a difference once I get a new map, so that’s why I keeping going to my yearly mapping appointment.
In the last couple of years my appointments have been easy. My map has changed only a little bit, it hasn’t been bad. I’ve been grateful because I really do hate when it drastically changes. So I went into my appointment today thinking not much would change and I would be in and out.
We started the first test where my audiologist pulls up my current map and we go through each electrode and she plays a different number of beeps at different loudness at different frequencies. I tell her how many beeps I heard. It’s hard! Sometimes my brain starts making up beeps in my head. This created a new map and it actually changed quite a bit. We turned my processor on with the new map to see how it sounded, and it was louder. I instantly said, “the fan sounds really loud.” My audiologist said that was a good sign since we changed those frequencies and a lot of speech sounds are those frequencies.
Next up was testing in the sound booth. Growing up I HATED the sound booth, I was scared I was going to get locked in there forever 😂 They seriously need to make those look less intimidating. We unplugged my processor from the computer and I put it on and everything sounded quiet again. We did the testing and I KNEW I wasn’t hearing as well. I was struggling to hear the words/sentences and repeat them. I got out of the sound booth and my audiologist asked, “how did you feel about that?” I said I felt like I’ve done better. She calculated my score and found that on that test I got 88% when last year I got 96%. That’s a huge difference, something wasn’t right.
We hooked back up to the computer and my audiologist was trying to figure out what was going on. Meanwhile I’m low key freaking out. I like to do well, so I was upset that my scores weren’t as good. What was wrong?? I immediately was scared something was wrong with the inside part and I would need to get surgery. I burst into tears and I asked my audiologist if something was wrong on the inside. She assured me everything was working on the inside.
We tested and tried a bunch of things. She got on the phone with cochlear, we tried some more things. Eventually they figured out something was wrong with the compliance. I have absolutely NO idea what that means, and my audiologist was so kind and patient as she explained it to me two times. We got it figured out, my new map was working, she gave me some stuff that might help if it gets quieter, and she recommend I get an upgrade. I’ve had this processor for 6 years, and it’s old and I need a new one. She also told me she wouldn’t make me get in the booth again to test “It’s for the best” she said. I absolutely agreed. I was EXHAUSTED and the thought of going into the booth again and doing another test would have pushed me over the edge.
I cried on the drive home, and I took off my cochlear implant because I need a break. I’m planning on taking a nap, letting my brain rest. It worked hard today.
I wanted to share this because I think it’s important for parents who have deaf kids to know this is what might feel like for their child. They might be feeling anxious, scared, overwhelmed, exhausted. They have every right to feel that way. Or they might handle it well and they are completely fine. Every audiologist appointment is different!
Here are some tips:
- First off, make sure you have yearly mappings! They are so helpful! I’m almost 24 and I still need yearly mappings. I’ve had 86 new maps throughout my life.
- Try to schedule the appointment on a day where you don’t have much going on. My mom would schedule the appointment on a Friday so I could have the weekend to adjust without being overwhelmed by going to school. Audiology appointments can be exhausting, so it’s nice to be able to go home and rest.
- Find a good pediatric audiologist! It makes a world of a difference having a pediatric audiologist who knows how to map my implant. My audiologist is so kind, patient, understanding, clear, and knows when it’s time to stop when I’m exhausted. She told me to email her if something still isn’t right. I also loved that she said, “I learn something new everyday!” It shows me that she is constantly trying to learn and improve.
I hope this helps! Feel free to reach out if you have any questions!
We had a great time on our honeymoon (a year after being married lol)🤟🏽. Jonathan had a lot of practice with ASL as he tried translating from Spanish to ASL. He still has much to learn and needs more practice but it was great seeing the progress that he has made through this experience.
