Because I tutor three subjects (biology, chemistry, and algebra), I just never know which topic each student will ask for any given class. This week was heavily loaded with trigonometry classes. This is when I wish that Zoom whiteboard had a copy and paste option for images (would be really handy to have a Unit Circle on the whiteboard). I got a lot of emotional responses and positive feedback from my last post about bullying. It seems like a lot of parents have gone through or are going through those situations. It's important that we talk about it because let's face it: any time your child is outside your home, he/she might experience bullying. And even in home, there is cyberbullying that can happen online.
Now I will risk being unpopular and encourage everyone to look at this issue from bully's perspective. Why does bullying happen in the first place, and what to do if your child happens to be one? There are a variety of issues that cause kids to behave in a mean way to their peers. It could be a low self-esteem, desire to fit within a group, abuse at home, or an underlaying mental or emotional issue. It's important to not assume that a child who bullies will grow up to be a criminal or a bad person. There are ways to change the behavior and even create friendships. The article below lists some effective strategies and provides good advice.

It’s important to realize that kids that are being bullied usually won’t talk about it openly. I was tutoring one of my students last week, and something didn’t feel right about her behavior. She looked depressed and wasn’t paying attention. After questioning her carefully, I discovered that some girls in her summer camp are picking on her. I told the parents, and I hope that they will take it seriously and resolve the issue. But I just can’t stress enough how important it is to talk to your children after they come home from school, camp, friend’s house etc. Especially if you sense that something is wrong. Because bullying can happen (and does happen) anywhere.
