Defination

1. Every word that a person is familiar with or that is employed in a specific book, subject, etc.

2. Every single word in a language.

What is vocabulary?

A person's vocabulary is their collection of well-known words. Vocabulary is a helpful and important tool that aids in communication and knowledge expansion for children (and adults! ), typically developing with age.

Types of Vocabulary

Depending on whether we're speaking, listening, reading, or writing, we could use different vocabulary.

Speaking

The words we can use to say out loud make up our speaking vocabulary. These words, which range in length from 5000 to 10,000 words, are used for communication and instruction.

2. Listening

Our listening vocabulary is the words we can understand through hearing them said aloud. Similar to the speaking vocabulary, we use these words to listen to what others are communicating to us and what they might be instructing us to do.

Did you know? While still within the womb, a foetus might begin to recognise some words. Before you are even born, you already have a listening vocabulary!

3. Reading

How many words we can understand when reading is determined by our reading vocabulary. Reading is also the best way to enhance your vocabulary because it introduces you to new words that you might not have come across or heard of before.

4.Writing

Our ability to spell and use words appropriately in context affects the vocabulary we use when writing. It's important to continually learn new vocabulary because people's writing vocabulary is often less than their speaking or listening vocabulary.

What are vocabulary building skills?

Having a large vocabulary is crucial, so if you're wondering what vocabulary development techniques are, you've come to the right spot. Here, we'll discuss what they are and how to apply them to increase your vocabulary.

What exactly are vocabulary-building skills, then?

Children need vocabulary-building techniques to expand their expanding vocabulary. Teachers frequently advise students to read widely and conduct research. Building a vocabulary involves learning new words, studying their meanings, and storing them for use in the future.

Here are some techniques teachers can use to help students expand their vocabulary.

1. Synonyms

Use different terms than "say," "pleasant," "good," or "bad"—we've all heard that tip, right? Children can add to their high-frequency vocabulary and go beyond their basic vocabulary by using synonyms.

A quick and simple technique to boost a child's vocabulary is to look at words they already know and identify others that imply the same thing or have meanings that are close to them. Children can often learn synonyms in a fun way by playing matching games.

2. Root Words, Prefixes and Suffixes

Many other words are derived from root words. A child's vocabulary for reading and writing will increase significantly if they are familiar with a number of root words and the prefixes and suffixes that can be added to them. Not only will they be able to spell them, but they will also be able to guess the meaning of a new word if it has a well-known root, prefix, or suffix.

3. Using dictionaries and thesaurus

Thesauruses and dictionaries are excellent resources for helping kids improve their vocabulary. When they come across a new term, kids should get into the habit of looking it up in the dictionary. They can learn its definition in this way. They need to be urged to note down the word and its definition so they can repeat it later.

4. Reading

Never underestimate the power of reading! The best and most efficient way for kids to increase their vocabulary is through reading. They will learn new words while consolidating their awareness of previously learned ones as they read. They can estimate new meanings using their prior vocabulary knowledge and then use their knowledge of words to discover the meanings of new words.

5. Repetition

After encountering a new word only once, it's doubtful that someone will recall its pronunciation, spelling, or meaning. Therefore, it's important to use a new word repeatedly to ensure that it sticks. You can write it down, draw it in a creative way, play a game using word cards that have it on them, or just write it down several times. These exercises will aid a child in keeping a new term in their expanding vocabulary.

What is Pronunciation?
pronunciation (noun): the way in which we pronounce a word
pronounce (verb): to make the sound of a word

It is very important to understand that the letters of the alphabet do NOT always represent the same sounds of English.

How many letters are there in the alphabets?

The alphabet is the set of 26 letters (from A to Z). The word "alphabet" derives from the first two letters of the Greek alphabet: alpha, beta

To pronounce words, we push air from our lungs up through our throat and vocal chords, through our mouth, past our tongue and out between our teeth and lips. (Sometimes air also travels through our nose.) Speakers of different languages tend to develop different muscles of the mouth for pronunciation. When we speak a foreign language, our muscles may not be well developed for that language, and we will find pronunciation more difficult. By practising the foreign language pronunciation, our muscles develop and pronunciation improves.
