Sharing a post from Brock Brewster…
“I can't express how much I have appreciated the work of the Pike County Health Department over the past 18 months. It would be impossible to count how many hours that the Pike County Health Department has devoted to the schools in our county. I know that I can safely speak for each Pike County superintendent when I say that our jobs have been made much, much less stressful knowing that the right answer or professional opinion is a text or phone call away. Something to remember is that our HD navigated 18 months of COVID without sacrificing their primary responsibilities. I am always a supporter of levies that are designed to make Pike County or our townships, schools, etc. better for our people, especially our kids. I truly believe that the Pike County General Health District has handled the past 18 months as well as (and better than many) any health district in the state. From a community service standpoint I can't personally see our HD could've done any more than they have. I talk to administrators, school staff members, and parents from multiple counties and the general message is the same after we discuss anything related to navigating the past year and a half - you're lucky to have a health department that is logical and works with your schools! Tomorrow night Pike County should make the Columbus news for having 100% passage of a county-wide levy. They have been there for us and now it's time for us to be there for them. Please support the Pike County General Health District levy on November 2nd!”

*Pike EMS Levy
As a reminder, the county wide Pike EMS levy that went into effect in 2020 has been withdrawn due to the switch to MedCare. This was a 1 mill levy. Pike EMS already had a .5 mill levy that was in place, and this also has been withdrawn. This results in a total of 1.5 mills that will be coming off the 2022 tax bills. Since that tax levy is dropping off, those who vote for the health levy will still end up with a net savings of approximately $17.50 each year on a home valued at 100k, resulting in lower taxes.

*Savings from the Pike EMS Levy ending while still voting YES for the Health Levy:
Home Value of $50,000 – savings of $8.75 year
Home Value of $100,000 – savings of $17.50 each year
Home Value of $150,000 – savings of $26.25 each year
Home Value of $200,000 -- savings of $35.00 each year

*Levy Details
This will be a 10 year, 1 mill levy. The estimated annual cost to property owners will be:
Home Value of $50,000 – $17.50 each year or $1.46 per month
Home Value of $100,000 – $35.00 each year or $2.92 per month
Home Value of $150,000 – $52.50 each year or $4.38 per month
Home Value of $200,000 -- $70.00 each year or $5.83 per month

*Role of the Health District
The Pike County General Health District health district has safeguarded our community and protected our citizens for over 100 years. The mission of the health district is to improve the quality of life of individuals and families in Pike County by preventing disease, promoting health, and providing environmentally safe surroundings.

The health district is truly the only county agency that is directly involved in the lives of our community from the cradle to the grave – we issue the birth certificate, provide childhood immunizations, provide a car seat if you can’t afford one, make sure that the food you and your family eat and the water you and your family drink are safe, make sure your waste is properly disposed, ensure that the roadways are safer while you are on your way to work or taking your kids to school, make certain that the school your child attends is free of safety hazards, make sure the city pool your kids are swimming in all summer and the campground you frequently visit is safe, help you to enjoy the outdoors without worrying about mosquitos biting, monitor that dog for rabies that bit you while you were taking a walk, ensure that the produce you bought on your way home from work at the farmer’s market is safe, provide that TB test for your new job, provide the meningitis vaccine for you to go to college, design your septic system for your new house, make certain that the rural road you live on doesn’t become a tire dump or that your new neighbor doesn’t litter the neighborhood with trash, set up a shelter during the power outage from the ice storm so you and your family can stay warm, provide adult immunizations, and then we issue your death certificate.

Since early 2020, the health district has still accomplished everything mentioned above in addition to all that has been required of them due to the COVID-19 pandemic. They took and continue to take a commonsense approach while keeping their community informed and being completely transparent.
