I would like to offer my sincerest thank you to everyone that has come out to the Honey Badger rides this year. The last one at Juanita Lake was very special and has a fond place in my heart. It’s so close to all of us and there is no quick way to get there, yet so many of you came and made it a great day. Lots of us camped the night before and inadvertently started what I think will be a great tradition of a Honey Badger final ride camp out. It’s been a great honor to have so many fine folk show up to my gravel routes. Thank you once again. I’m already looking forward to the rides in 2024!

20/09/2023

As per the usual, there’s also a shorter length option for folks at the Juanita Lake Honey Badger ride.

Your weekly reminder that next Sunday on October 1st is the last Honey Badger ride of 2023. Juanita Lake in Northern California. Check out the link in the bio for the route, photos, and description.

Despite scraping the crap out of my shins, I did manage to finalize the routes for the upcoming Juanita Lake Honey Badger ride on October 1st. If you’re gonna be at tomorrow’s Lost Creek Honey Badger and you don’t drop me like a bad habit right out the gate, I’ll let you in on the details. Route will be live in the links by Monday.

10/09/2023

Believe it or not, this was the best section of the “road” I was scouting for the upcoming Juanita Lake Honey Badger ride on October 1st. This will not be on the route. And people wonder why my legs are so scratched up all the time.

It’s looking to be beautiful weather for this Sunday’s Honey Badger. We’re meeting up at the C parking lot in the day use area and the ride leaves at 9. Remember there is a day use fee of $4 so bring some spare change. See ya all there!

If you’re even considering a new gravel or mtn bike, you owe it to yourself to swing on by Flywheel Bicycles and check out the line of Salsa bikes.

Now through September 5th is a great time to pick up a new Salsa bike! Come down to Flywheel and check 'em out! If we don't have exactly what you need we're honoring the sale prices on special orders. https://www.salsacycles.com/

I’m not gonna lie. This smoke is bumming me out. It’s usually decent at at altitude, but even Mt Ashland is pretty smoky. That red circle with 161 in it in the second photo is Mt Ashland’s AQI and it’s unhealthy. It’s likely quite a bit worse as soon as you drop off the divide. So I’m gonna go out on a limb and say the ride for this Sunday is gonna have to wait. I’ll probably still wind up driving up there and hoping against hope that it won’t be smoky, but it doesn’t seem like that’s going to happen anytime soon.

If you can’t make a Honey Badger ride, you can still ride the route whenever you want to. Here’s the link to all the GPS downloads with route descriptions.

Looking forward to seeing everyone at the Whiskey Springs Honey Badger ride tomorrow. We’re meeting up just outside the Whiskey Springs campground and the ride leaves at 9am. There’s three route length options (24/41/61 miles) and the routes are linked in the event page. See ya there!

Mt Ashland route scouting for an upcoming old school ATB type ride was very successful. I’m thinking August 27th at 9 starting and finishing at the lodge. I’ll post route details shortly.

Photos from Honey Badger Rides's post 07/08/2023

Thinking about a potential route that’s closer to old school ATB than a modern gravel/mixed surface loop. Lots of high alpine miles on old logging roads. No pavement, but also no trails or singletrack. Of course in classic Honey Badger style, you’re fine to ride a gravel bike, or a mtn bike, Honey Badger don’t care. 40-50 miles, 5500-6000ft of vertical, at altitude and starting and finishing at Mt Ashland. Let me know what you think.

A reminder that this Sunday is the Whiskey Springs Honey Badger ride. Three route options; short, medium, and long. Meeting up just outside the Whiskey Springs campground off of Butte Falls -Fish Lake Rd. Ride leaves at 9am.

Photos from Honey Badger Rides's post 26/07/2023

August 13th at 9am is the Whiskey Springs Honey Badger ride. Three routes to choose from, 23.3, 41, and 61 miles. Lots of places to filter water as the ride is in the thick of the Butte Springs watershed where Medford gets its water supply from. It’s up from the valley on the western flank of Mt McGlaughlin in lots of big timber so the temps are much nicer than on the valley floor. See you there!

Pre-rode the short Big Elk Honey Badger route with yesterday. It’s in perfect form even if I’m not. It was really nice to get out of the heat of the valley. That 15-20 degree difference is amazing.

This Sunday at 9 is the Big Elk Honey Badger ride. Meet up at the intersection of Brown Mtn Rd (FS Rd 3705) and Big Elk Rd (FS Rd 37). Big Elk Rd connects Dead Indian Memorial Rd with Hwy 140. Two routes to choose from, a 26.5 mile and a 50 mile.

The canal section of the Greensprings Honey Badger always seems to get the most love, but the route has plenty of beautiful sections to enjoy. Little Hyatt Lake, Burnt Creek Rd, Buck Prairie and Buck Divide are all in the first half and have spectacular vistas. See everyone out at Greensprings Summit on Hwy 66 at 9am this Sunday for the Honey Badger.

Thanks to all that came out for the Flywheel Grand Re-Opening Honey Badger ride. The views off of Anderson Butte made up for the climb up Anderson Creek. We won’t talk about how chilly the descent down the NE face back to town was. Looking forward to many more Honey Badger Rides in the future.

Flywheel Re-Opening Honey Badger Ride 16/11/2022

This Saturday is the grand reopening of Flywheel Bicycle Solutions in Talent and Peter has asked me to lead a Honey Badger Ride that will start and finish at the shop. Join me at noon for a 28 mile loop that will climb up Anderson Cr, swing around the East side of Anderson Butte, and then side hill our way back to the shop through the foothills of Phoenix and Talent to enjoy some food and drinks.

After scouting a modified Colestin Trestle route, I talked a few friends into riding it this weekend. It was so nice I added it to the Honey Badger Rides Collection on my page. 45ish miles and 3650ish ft. of climbing. Check out the link in the bio for full details and the downloadable route.

It won’t be all frosty like it is in the picture for Saturday’s Big Elk Honey Badger ride, but after a summer of triple digit heat, a day with highs in the low to mid 60s it might feel like it.

Just a reminder that even you can’t make a Honey Badger Ride, you still can check out the routes whenever you want. The Collections page at my RideWithGPS has them all there. It’s always awesome to have everyone show up for the group ride, but it’s also really nice to get a message from a friend saying they used the route to do their own ride and had a great time!

2022 Shasta Gravel Hugger 18/08/2022

Ben Brainard, the promoter of the Shasta Gravel Hugger, had this great video of the race made. It’s great inspiration to get on your bike and keep putting in the miles. The Shasta Valley has some of the most spectacular scenery and the roads are amazing. It’s also pretty neat to look at riding in cold conditions when we’re in the middle of a scorcher of a summer.

Sometimes after I’ve laid out a route, I’ll ride parts of it the opposite direction and realize that maybe that’s the way it should have been done all along. It also means I probably need to re-do some of my routes on to update the newly preferred direction.

Great article on choosing the right tire for your gravel rides. I’m a big fan of the 40ish sized tires for all the Honey Badger rides, but I’ve seen people do them on sizes as small as road tires all the way up to 29”+.

While there aren’t any Honey Badger rides coming up in the next few weeks, you still can ride the routes. Check out the Collection on RideWithGPS for all the Honey Badger routes.

Escaped the smoke down in the Rogue Valley, but couldn’t avoid the heat. Thankfully the Whiskey Springs loop has plenty of shade and water on it. Thanks to everyone who came out for the ride yesterday and got to experience one of my favorite gravel routes.

Photos from Honey Badger Rides's post 26/07/2022

It’s gonna be a scorcher this week down in the valley. Luckily, it looks like the temps will start to drop this weekend a bit. Of course, getting up a couple thousand feet in altitude into the big timber and high country will help with the heat too. The Whiskey Springs Honey Badger ride this weekend will be just what is needed. I’ve been checking the temps and it’s usually a good 10-15 degrees cooler up there.

Another Greensprings Honey Badger Ride in the books. Thanks to all you fine folks who came out and made these rides another exceptional day goofing off in the woods.

05/07/2022

This Sunday is the classic Greensprings Honey Badger. Meet up at the summit of Greensprings Hwy (Hwy 66. Get your kicks) and we’ll ride off at 9am. Two lengths, 33 and 49 miles to choose from. Both finish on 15, car free miles on the road next to the canal with views of Mt Shasta. Clink the link in the event here on FB for route details on to download the track. See you there!

Greensprings Honey Badger Shorter 21/06/2022

There’s a new route option for the upcoming Greensprings Honey Badger ride on July 10th. A 33 mile option for those that might want to bite off a bit less than a full Badger’s worth. It starts and finishes at the same spot as the full Badger. You’ll leap frog ahead of the group by lopping off the Burnt Creek and Buck Prairie section of the course. You’ll also roll right past Hyatt Resort if you want to stop for some mid ride refreshments. Here’s the route for your GPS/Phones/Smart watches.

Conditions are super prime for July 10th Honey Badger Greensprings Ride. The last 15 miles of the ride is on this car free canal service road. With the weather looking like it’s about to warm up, you may be tempted to cool off in the water. You wouldn’t be the first. Just make certain you don’t fall in. That’s happened too.

Photos from Honey Badger Rides's post 07/06/2022

Shout out to all that came out to the Big Elk Honey Badger. The weather broke before we started and the conditions turned out to be quite nice. Not a bad way to spend a Sunday, rolling around in the woods with friends.

06/06/2022

It was a beautiful day up in the high country for the Big Elk Honey Badger. The rains they were ominous in the valley and threatening in the hills. But then the rain stopped and the sun came out. We had 10 people come out. The rest of ya are soft. 10ply bud.

It’s a little wet outside right now. It’s supposed to let up before tomorrow’s Honey Badger Ride up at Big Elk, but just in case I’m prepping the bike tonight with the super secret home brew chain l**e.
