Ohio Til I Die

We celebrate all the things that and continue to make Ohio great.

We are putting more of our vintage finds up on the site. I am in love with these postcards. They were all sent in 1911 between the same couple. One of the most interesting things to me is how many of them were just signed “George” with no other message. Of course some also contain sheer poetry like: You have done NOTHING to offend me. I guess I am just naturally slow. I’ll try harder next time. George” I love having vintage things on my walls and knowing the story behind them. I have no doubt they will find their way to just the right frames.

For a brief time, one year (1914) to be exact, Columbus experimenter with double decker streetcars on its old system. Congestion from the single door used for entry and exit and it’s inability to make tight corners proved unbearable obstacles and the experiment was scrapped.

Cincinnati’s Coney Island opened in 1886 and operated more or less in its original form up until the assets were transferred by the owners at the time up to their new park, King’s Island. Though some version continued operating, including the Sunlight Pool which has remained the world’s largest flat-surface-recirculating pool for over 90 years. Over the past couple of years new attractions have been added but it’s glory years seemed really amazing. If you like old theme parks I would highly recommend digging a little further into this one’s history.

The Chalet in Strongsville opened as Winter Funland in 1967 as the first refrigerated toboggan run in the world. To this day it remains the tallest in Ohio, sending riders at speeds up to 50 mph! Also check out the patch at the end. I don’t know what was going on with Ohio winter attraction specific patch design in the 60’s but they were on to something.

If you’re like me, your Christmas soundtrack consists of Dean, Nat, Frank, and Bing. Did you know that Dean Martin was born in Steubenville? He also died ON Christmas Day. I hope everyone is sitting by the fire with loved ones, with drink in hand, and Dino on the record player.

I usually hate crowds but I sure miss the golden age of retail around Christmas. I probably shouldn’t be saying this as an Instagram account connected to an Ecom site but since we are primarily brick and mortar retailers I think it’s alright. I hope we get to a point where the magic and service of retail come back and it’s not just data driven psychographics. You could never have a floor devoted to helping children buy low priced, small items in today’s environment of fighting for ROI per inch. Higbee’s exemplified these magic moments as well as any other golden age retailer as downtown Cleveland’s first and last, though it closed as the objectively less cool Dillards, department store.

Sorry for near back to back car related posts, and I am sure I would know this already if I’d taken the time to read the card in the entrance of the but I just found out this morning that Crosley cars were built in Cincinnati! I have always loved this quirky little cars but they just got a lot cooler in my mind.

Opened in 1961, is Ohio’s oldest ski resort. Anyone planning on hitting the slopes this weekend? Our patches are cool but check out these heartbreakingly cool vintage Snow Trails patches. I think I have a ski sweater about to get a huge upgrade.
