The first topographically accurate lunar globe, displaying the current lunar phases at any given tim

The result of 4 years of research, design, development and prototype. MOON is the first topographically accurate lunar globe using some of the data gathered by the team of the Institute of Planetary Research (German Aerospace Center) working on the NASA's Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter mission. The project was launched and successfully funded on Kickstarter in May 2016, raising more than £145K and enabling the production of the first batch.

🌒 This is a computer render of Earth’s Moon ✨

MOON was created by translating high resolution topographical images taken by NASA’s Lunar Recognisance Orbiter (LRO) into an accurate to scale 3-dimensional computer model.

The LRO is NASA’s robotic spacecraft currently orbiting the Moon in an eccentric polar mapping orbit.

This computer render of our 3D model was made possible by the data captured during this mission.

We just received a fantastic sample of our moon for a commission in New York. This time a 200mm section of the globe at 1m diameter. This section equals 700km, the distance between London and Edinburgh, or Paris and Toulouse.

For all the moon fanatics out there. This year marks the 50 year anniversary of the Apollo 11 moon landings. The Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum, Smithsonian Institution is celebrating with a travelling exhibition around the US, which documents the whole story of getting a man on the moon! It's called “Destination Moon: The Apollo 11 Mission” and is currently at the Heinz Heinz History Center and next at the The Museum of Flight ⠀

Here’s a super cool picture of the inside and outside of the Apollo 11 command module Columbia. Did you know this was the only part of the Apollo 11 spacecraft that made it from Earth to the moon and back again?⠀

Check out the new projects released earlier this week on Kickstarter from students. Quickstarter is a design prompt from MOON cofounder to invite designers, artists and makers to create and launch their own small scale passion projects in the spirit of having fun. As we know, all the best projects start on Kickstarter... check the last image for the throwback!

New moon tonight 🌑 The real time clock and gearing system always makes sure that our MOON + SUN is perfectly in sync with the phase of the actual moon!

Insanely Detailed 3-D Globe of the Moon Shows Every Dimple

Great write up from Wired :)

wired.com Lunar globes already exist, but 3-D, topographically accurate ones do not. These designers say they've made the first.

30/10/2017

From our first batch of 300 MOONs, we have sent 212 to the Kickstarter backers and the rest was on pre-order on our website. We are now completely sold out. So we are working on a second batch! We hope to get it made in a few months, stay tuned if you want to get one!

Adam Savage's New Moon Model Globe

To our surprise, Adam Savage was one of the backer and made an unboxing video.

Adam and Norm check out this beautiful model of the moon, which just arrived at the cave! We take a close look at its detailed topography, and Adam brings it...

We are very happy and proud to tell you that all MOONs have landed to the backers! We managed to ship all of them in June and early July.

30/10/2017

Big news: Exactly 1 year ago (13th of April 2016), we pushed the green button on this Kickstarter campaign. Today, we are super happy to say that we are shipping the first MOON!

We received all the foam inserts and shipping boxes a few ago and were waiting for all the display boxes to arrive. They came yesterday and look great.

Thank you for being so patient and sending us nice emails.

Time for an update with details on what we have been up to and how MOON is moving forward.

We won’t cut corners with you: we are late, but we are good.

We are late because…
The Christmas and New Years Eve period has been putting several things on hold.
The main one being the packaging. We have to ship your rewards to 28 different countries, it will be tracked and signed for. Because of MOON's value, we need to be 100% certain that the packaging is designed to resist shocks, weird handling and other unknown manipulations in transit.

We sent a sample of the packaging with a MOON prototype mid-December to some friends in New York in order to see how it would arrive. The parcel was scheduled to be received within 3 days but it got delayed a lot during Christmas and only arrived in January. The MOON was intact, so the packaging design is correct.

30/10/2017

Here is an update on the production of MOON.

We are now receiving all the parts one after the other in our studio so that we can start the final assembly. They are looking great. However this should have happened last month. We were fairly confident that things will continue to go as planned, but we have had a series of unexpected issues from certain suppliers. Not all of them were capable of manufacturing the parts in large amount and keep to the high standard we agreed on. So we had to get the parts remade.

This delay in the production was not planned and is unfortunately causing delays in the shipping of your rewards. We are really sorry about this, but we will not send you something we quickly bodged in the last weeks. After 4 years of work, it would be a pity. Please understand that we are working 24/7 on this project and we are doing all we can to get the product on your shelf.

When can I expect my reward?

With Christmas approaching and factories closing until NYE, we will have a delay of few weeks. We are aiming to ship the first batch of MOONs at the end of January / beginning of February. Do not worry, you have not missed the survey to give us your postal address, we will contact you in due time. ;-)

30/10/2017

We have just launched MOON’s website! Feel free to check it out: www.moonproject.space

Anyone can pre-order the lunar globes and the MOON with Sun (shipping February).

And our lunar samples, maps and calendar are ready to be shipped within 48 hours of placing your order. Christmas gift?

30/10/2017

Just a quick update to let you know that we have shipped all the following rewards:

£6 - MOON postcards
£10 - Patch + MOON postcards
£20 - Lunar sample + patch + MOON postcards + MOON map (stretch goal)
£50 - MOON 2017 calendar + lunar sample + patch + MOON postcards + MOON map (stretch goal)
There are still 31 backers who did not send us their shipping address. So please fill in the survey and we will send you your reward.

IMPORTANT: For the £50 backers, you should expect to receive 2 packages. 1 tube for the calendar and 1 envelope for the lunar sample, patch, postcards and map.

30/10/2017

Hello everyone!

First things first: we have just sent out the surveys to collect the shipping addresses of those of you who backed the £6 (postcards), £10 (patch), £20 (lunar sample) and £50 rewards (MOON calendar). So make sure you are checking your emails and fill in the survey otherwise we will not be able to dispatch your rewards.

So yes, rewards are in production and ready to be sent out in September as planned!

30/10/2017

Fantastic!! WOOHOO!! Thank you all for joining the MOON team. The campaign is now over and we are stoked to see so many of you contributing to it! WE ARE SO HAPPY!!!

Some of you have had their bank refusing the Kickstarter payment or have their card that expired. You can rectify this by going in your account and changing the payment method. Kickstarter has sent you an email with all the necessary info. You have 7 days to rectify this. If this does not work, feel free to contact us directly.

What's next?

We will spend the next few weeks setting up the logistical plan for the coming months. We have to produce more than 200 MOONS with Sun, so we will be getting a bigger space for the production and assembly. We will also let all our suppliers know about the order quantity that we will be placing so they can get ready. We will spend the month of June to work on the MOON map as well so that all the "small" rewards will be shipped in September as planned. We will keep you in the loop by sending updates. If you have any questions, simply email us on Kickstarter or at [email protected]

30/10/2017

Some of you have asked us to show an exploded view of all the components. So below is our exploded view. Note that we took the picture from space, in zero gravity. ;-)
