In 1967, an organization called “The Resistance” was founded by David Harris who supposedly led the draft resistance movement and went to jail for his beliefs during the Vietnam War. David Miller was the first Vietnam War resister to publicly burn his draft card. Both stayed in the US and wrote memoirs; Harris, “Dreams Die Hard (1982); Miller, “I Didn’t Know God Made H***y Tonk Communists” (2001). In the “Boy with the Best Laugh”, read about how Adam escaped to Canada to avoid the draft!

In 1965, the “beat” poets Allen Ginsberg and Jack Kerouac contributed to coining the expression “hippie” as a way for people to turn war into peace. Hippies cloaked themselves in floral fabrics and doled flowers out to soldiers. This counterculture movement arose in part as opposition to U.S. involvement in the Vietnam War; (1955–1975).

Can autistic people fall in love? Most certainly! People with autism can experience romantic love and often attach considerable value to their close relationships! Any difficulties in their relationships would involve: the necessity for routines, social interaction challenges, and communication issues. Not that much different than the rest of us folks!

Please help raise Autism awareness and acceptance:
• Autism now affects 1 in 44 children
• Boys are four times more likely to have autism than girls
• Autism greatly varies from person to person (no two people with autism are alike)
• Autism is the fastest growing developmental disorder, yet most underfunded
• Autism is treatable, not a hopeless condition

***Families of draft dodgers and parents of autistic children have reached out to me to share how they relate to my characters. I am grateful for their responses.
“The Boy with the Best Laugh”, however, is not all (dark) drama. I have received hilarious messages from mothers of various nationalities concerning one particular scene, my favorite! Consider a Jewish mother’s love for her daughter as she exchanges words for the first time with her daughter’s fiancée: the fiasco turns out to be a drill instead of a welcome mat!

In November 1969, the largest antiwar demonstration in American history took place in Washington, D.C. Two hundred and fifty thousand Americans gathered peacefully demanding withdrawal of American troops from Vietnam. Later, the estimate would climb to 500,000! The antiwar movement bitterly divided Americans. Many people opposed the war; they were considered unpatriotic by others.

During the Vietnam War, women waited for their husbands and finances to return home. There were pregnant women hoping their husbands would hurry home to be present for the birth of their babies. But, when there was no word, and time had passed, these families were often notified of the deaths of their loved ones by telegram, the sole means of family notification. Unfortunately, there wouldn’t have been any better way of softening the blow.

During the Vietnam War US draft dodgers settled in Canada’s big cities such as Toronto, Montreal, and Vancouver. As the numbers of draft dodgers grew towards the end of the 1960s, more and more people in Canada started working for organizations which helped draft dodgers find work and settle down.

There are many famous autistic people, including musicians and artists. One, who was a surprise to me, was Marty Balin, singer/songwriter and founder of the Jefferson Airplane. His huge commercial success included their 1967 second album, Surrealistic Pillow, which went gold. Marty was diagnosed as autistic when he was a child and struggled with autism into adulthood. He also had a fascination with painting and acting. Meet Lillie in “The Boy with the Best Laugh” as she brings you into her world of music!
