A great Ohio cuisine, known all around, is Cincinnati chili! DYK: During a 1974 speech on the floor of the US Senate, debating Sens. Goldwater (AZ) and Tower (TX) on the real chili, Ohio Sen. Robert Taft declared “Each (Tower & Goldwater) likened the other chili to barnyard apples and possibly both spoke truly. The only real chili comes from Cincinnati, Ohio.”

In “The Authentic History of Cincinnati Chili”, Dann Woellert traces the original recipe to 2 brothers, Tom and John Kiradjieff, who immigrated from Macedonia in northern Greece in the early 1920s. The Kiradjieff brothers based their recipe on the Mediterranean & Slavic influences of Macedonia. Their creation resembles moussaka, a casserole-like dish that layers eggplant or potatoes with tomato sauce & ground meat, which is popular in Greece, the Balkans (bordering Macedonia), & the Middle East. It's also similar to Greek pastitsio, baked pasta with ground meat. The spices in Cincinnati chili (like cinnamon, cloves, nutmeg, & allspice) are also a testament to the dish's Macedonian roots. But Cincinnati chili's use of chili powder sets it apart from moussaka, pastitsio, and other dishes from the region.

Ohio still has a strong connection to the Super Bowl, even though neither Ohio team is playing in this year's game. DYK: The Pro Football Hall of Fame is located in Canton, Ohio. That's where the American Professional Football Association, later renamed the National Football League, was founded on Sept. 17, 1920.
