Music theory is essential to understanding and applying every detail written on a musical score. A clear grasp of music theory will aid students in making extra progress in their at home studies. Neva adds theory into every lesson, but strongly suggests students have a separate theory class (or longer lesson split into two parts) during the week to cover all materials! For younger learners, Neva adds interactive games and worksheets to enhance their musical understanding.

Learning the violin takes patience and commitment. Notes with Neva strives to make this process fun and informative for her students! A focus on posture, clear tone, and learning to read music is at the forefront of each violin lesson. Neva is familiar with both Suzuki and the Royal Conservatory of Music methods; using both of these curriculums in lessons. She also likes to add in traditional fiddle music whenever possible.

Meet Neva!

Nevalea Tkachuk (Neva) is a graduate of the University of Toronto's Faculty of Music, where she obtained a Bachelors Degree in Voice Performance and an Advanced Certificate in Historical Voice Performance. She also holds an ARCT Diploma in Voice Performance [First Class Honours with Distinction] from the Royal Conservatory of Music. During her studies, Neva sang in masterclasses for Wallis Giunta, Tom Diamond, Daniel Taylor, Nancy Argenta, and Vicki St. Pierre, among notable others.

As a classical soprano, Neva has been a soloist for the Advanced Oratorio Program at the Victoria Conservatory of Music and the Early Italian Opera workshop at the Lunenburg Academy of Music Performance, as well as a chorus member with Opera in Concert. She held the 2017 Sir Henry Pellatt Award from the Kiwanis Festival, and represented Toronto in the provincial finals of the Ontario Music Festivals Association, with honourable mention. A well-rounded performer, Neva was active on UofT's Varsity Pom Team, dancing competitively and performing the National Anthem at Varsity Blues games. Combining her interests in dance and early music, Neva trained intensively in ballet and Baroque dance in Opera Atelier's 2016 Summer Dance Intensive.

Neva began her musical journey at the tender age of 4 years old, starting with the violin. With the encouragement of her parents and childhood teachers, she was inspired to pursue music in-depth through multi-disciplinary study in piano, voice, percussion, flute, theory and music history. Neva continues to perfect her craft through research of the latest pedagogical practices.
