A "Cone Success Case"! As one positive spin way to look at these. This cone and the others may have just made "that critical difference" which may have prevented an even worse or more tragic incident.

If so, we may never even know -- because fortunately it did not happen. I think this is powerful to think about...

Keep using cones and other advance warning traffic control devices!

FROM THE DESK OF THE CHIEF

A special thank you goes out to our fire police officers that were working the road closures this afternoon for the vehicle rescue incident. This call for assistance required the roadway to be shut down for the safety of the patients and the first responders.

Today, with the combination of multiple road closures in the region due to construction and Friday afternoon rush hour traffic, the perfect storm for gridlock was created. Our fire police officers do their best to provide information and explain alternate routes. They also recognize that many people do not respond well to a change in their travel plans.

While operating the traffic control points, this traffic cone pictured below was struck by a vehicle in a reckless manner. That cone could have been one of our volunteers. That cone could have been a first responder not making it home to their family tonight. In Montgomery County, we have had a rapid increase in first responders being struck on the roadway by vehicles. IT NEEDS TO STOP! Put down your phone, stop rubber necking and pay attention to the personnel giving you directions on the roadway. Instead of a middle finger and creative name calling, give these volunteers a wave or a “thank you”. We are here for your safety and ours.

The motoring public was less than kind to our volunteers this afternoon. Fire Police are our front line workers that keep us safe and make sure that we make it home to our families at the end of each incident. They do NOT deserve the disrespect that they received this afternoon.

It is disheartening that we even need to write this post this evening.

Yours in service,

Andrew A. Duncan
Chief of Fire Operations
Gilbertsville Fire and Rescue

Was this another Cone Success Case? Did these cones make "that critical difference" and possibly prevent a much worse or tragic result from occurring?

Another close call for your . While operating on scene of a motor vehicle accident this morning on Interstate 85, a vehicle not paying attention nor adhering to the states move over law, struck a cone almost hitting our fire apparatus and responders who were working the incident. We can't stress this enough, please SLOW DOWN & MOVE OVER! Move Over VA
