Save Madibeng calls for the restoration of Letlhabile Community Radio (LCR fm)

“As Save Madibeng we stand in complete solidarity with the people of Letlhabile and neighboring areas in pursuit of the restoration of the Indigenous community radio station that was known as an important role player in delivering relevant information to communities in their Indigenous languages that directly impacts their livelihoods,” said Sydney Monnakgotla who is the Convener of Save Madibeng.

Save Madibeng believes that the closure of the station has created a massive vacuum in the broadcasting space and the development of future broadcasters and most importantly this has led to the community of Madibeng being deprived their basic right to information and their platform to communicate things that affect them.

“We are calling interested individuals to rally behind this campaign initiated by Save Madibeng – to get ICASA’s attention to review their decision of not issuing the station with the license to broadcast to our communities,” Monnakgotla expressed

Radio Letlhabile as it was affectionately known was an active agent in community education and information sharing. Further, it was accessible by community members including community based organisations like faith based organisations, civil society movements, etc.

Sydney went on to say, “Radio Letlhabile was a people-centred radio station and its absence is louder. Community Radio world in Madibeng is no longer the same since the closure of our community station. As Save Madibeng we will continue to stand firm against other broadcasters or station managers who have turned community radio stations into their Spaza shops.”
