Review #451

🔵 Matt Dorsey - Let Go

Genre: Progressive Pop-Rock
Year: 2023
Origin: USA 🇺🇲

Matt Dorsey can do more than just play bass.

As a modern prog listener, I came across "Sound Of Contact" a long time ago, was immediately hooked and remembered the names of all the musicians involved. One of them caught my attention repeatedly not too long ago through his participation in the sensational "ProgJect": Bassist Matt Dorsey. But to call Matt simply a bass player would not do justice to his abilities. He is a true multi-instrumentalist. And he shows this ability without exceptions on his fantastic first solo album.

The album is already visually striking due to the appealing cover art by Ed Unitsky. If you open yourself to Matt Dorsey's solo music, you can expect a colourful album that impressively proves how good Dorsey really is as a composer, instrumentalist and singer. The album serves a sub-genre that I find really interesting: progressive pop-rock.

The song and the melody are always at the centre of every single composition. With this approach, Dorsey tastefully decorates his songs with the help of his versatile skills and is supported not only by his own abilities, but also by the guest appearance of drummers Marco Minnemann and Jonathan Mover. Dave Kerzner also contributes a cool synth solo.
The eight songs oscillate between cool pop-rock, sophisticated prog parts and additionally adds little refinements again and again, which ensure a continuous attention of the listener. After already 31 minutes, the album "Let Go" ends with a very positive basic feeling, which Dorsey's music skilfully transports.

My favourite track is "Impossible Friends", which shows very nicely how elegantly Dorsey combines catchiness with progressive demands.

With "Let Go", Matt Dorsey presents a strong album that makes you want to hear more of the musician's solo material. Congratulations and keep up the good work!

Did someone say Matt Dorsey or even Matt Dorsey?
In Prog with Rush on the cover?
🤘😍🤘

So with subs copies landing, here's the cover of Prog 139, on sale this Friday, April 14 (US on sale May 12).

RUSH's Signals album was a heady mix of progressive ideals married with the new technology a new decade brought with it, announcing the arrival of the keyboard-driven era that continued throughout the 1980s. With the release of the new deluxe box set, we celebrate the Canadians' ninth studio album on the cover of the new issue of Prog Magazine.

Elsewhere Jethro Tull tell us all about their latest studio album, as do space rock legends Hawkwind, Aubrey ‘Po’ Powell lifts the lid on the exciting times of the Hipgnosis design collective he ran with the late Storm Thorgerson as they re-wrote the rule book of album cover design in the 1970s and Alan Parsons is grilled by The Pineapple Thief’s biggest APP fan Bruce Soord.

We also talk to exciting Canadian prog duo Crown Lands, Exploring Birdsong, RAIN -band-, King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard, Silver Moth, Matt Dorsey, Plank, Leap Day and loads more…

This issue comes with four Rush postcards designed by their album cover artist Hugh Syme and a fantastic 20-tracks free downloadable sampler featuring music from Twelfth Night and their extended family, specially chosen for you by the band themselves!

MATT DORSEY - Let Go (Album Review) 29/03/2023

MATT DORSEY - Let Go (Album Review) Launching a debut solo album can often be an exercise in patience and tenacity. All the more reason that Matt Dorsey must be feeling triumphant right about now. Most prog fans who know his name have likely heard his playing in Sound of Contact or on one of Dave Kerzner’s other projects like In Con...

Music Street Journal - Music News & Reviews 28/03/2023

The reviews are beginning to roll in for "Let Go". Here's some great quotes from Gary Hill @ Music Street Journal.

“While musically, not everything here is a slam dunk under progressive rock, this is billed as progressive pop rock… Whatever you call this, it’s a potent disc.”

On the title track, Let Go, the “bass work on this definitely makes me think of Chris Squire. The track is a high energy prog rocker that again makes me think of Squackett just a bit.”

Man is more “energized and rocking, the bass playing on this is positively incendiary. This is up-tempo AOR prog that's on fire. It also has a killer keyboard dominated instrumental movement further down the road.”

Full review is here. http://www.musicstreetjournal.com/index_cdreviews_display.cfm?id=108276

You can check out both of these tracks on my Bandcamp page AND pre-order the digital album before it releases on April 7.

Music Street Journal - Music News & Reviews While musically, not everything here is a slam dunk under progressive rock, this is billed as progressive pop rock. Additionally, there are some guests who have some serious prog pedigrees. Those people are Marco Minnemann (drums on three tracks) and Jonathan Mover (drums on three) and Dave Kerzner....
