This painting is 'Tockholes Road,' overcast day, brightened by the Gorse blooms. Size 30x24cm. I'm not sure at all what a Tockhole is? But whatever the name this is a lovely fresh and bonnie area to walk, paint or just catch the air.

Yesterday the postman brought a new box of 6 different 60ml oil paints all reds and browns from Jacksons in London. I've never used these particular colours before. Im sure they are going to give some great muted landscape colours. The painters of yore in Britain and Holland always used Flake White. Which gave them those perfect greys for land or sea. The thing is, I'm not totally clued up about the healthiness of the lead content in Flake White. I better get some gloves and change some of my bad palette mixing habits. These habits annoy me anyway.

For the last three months or so I’ve been out and about working on some very enjoyable commissions. Today I went into my Studio at Falcon Mill. It seemed an age since I was here. Switching on the lights I felt a little apprehensive. I’ve been working in natural light filled places, and outdoors but do you know what? As soon as the lights had warmed up, I could see beyond the mess into what I can only describe as “my cave of colour” Seriously, colour fills the space, paintings of all shapes and sizes, landscapes, seascapes, portraits compete for brightness and jostle across floor, easel and shelves with dried paint, brushes, pots of this and that, art books, art mags and artefacts, the richly mixed aroma of coffee and oil paint, a large handsome, serene, hand carved Buddha complete with rosewood mala beads smiles happy to see me as ever. What is there not to like. Even the geometry of the back of my easel is interesting to me today. Question is will it be ready for the Falcon Mill Open Studios event first week in November? A solo exhibition by Rob Miller titles Landscapes with absent figures inspired by 50 years of exploration of Lancashire, Cumbria and the Hebrides. Landscapes and coastal seascapes Exhibition 16th July to 27th September 2019

The landscape of the Northern Countryside has always fascinated Rob Miller, who gained a Distinction in Painting from the University of Bolton. Miller is particularly influenced by the Lancashire and Lake District landscape, its raw climate, beauty and gritty history. Walking and climbing through it is always a joyful experience. As an artist, being still painting within it is almost meditative.
Entitled ‘Landscapes with absent figures’ this new exhibition, opening Tuesday 16 July 5.30-7.30pm, presents Miller’s most recent landscapes and coastal paintings. In these scenes the human presence has been stripped away, making them absent, unimportant, except where they have left marks or rigid shapes which have survived enough to have a visual purpose in a found composition.
Whilst painting, different things attract and hold the artist’s thoughts. Scenes that exude a passage of light, whether in the corner of a bright field, high in the mountains or by the sea under stormy skies, are a frequent source of inspiration for Miller. Working outside or painting from his notes makes this a direct experience for the artist as he aims to portray the sublime.
Back at his Falcon Mill studio, the work finishes somewhere between abstraction and figurative: depending on the nuances of the paint, techniques and the making of colour. Miller see each colour range as a ‘stanza’ and each brush mark as a part of each painting’s arpeggio: “Instinctively certain colours please me as I mix them. The paint feels good and tactile sometimes as it slides around the palate. Visually, moving in and through the geometry of a place as I draw freehand frustrates and engages me fully.”
Through the exhibition the artist hopes to share his sense of awe that he feels in nature with others: “For me, a painting is like making a poem, both an expression of a feeling and an impression of a place”.

The Gallery At St George, Bolton has kindly invited me to stage a solo exhibition. The preview was this Tuesday 16th July. Many thanks for those who came for the great conversations and the red dots. Apologies to my linked in contacts for not giving details of the preview earlier things are a bit instagram-centric these days. There are enough paintings left and all remains on the walls until the shows end at the end of September.

The shows title is "Landscape with Absent figures" inspired by the poets and , my many walks and explorations over the half century through the countryside of Lancashire Cumbria and the Hebrides. Open 9am til 5pm Monday to Friday. The gallery is situated at No 2 St Georges Road Bolton. Parking is easily available close by and there is good coffee and refreshments avaiable in the Gallery's cafe.
