The Red Quartet is a crossover ensemble featuring Marissa Steingold (vocals), Philip Vaiman (violin), Kenton Youngstrom (guitar) and Maksim Velichkin (cello). We will present an exciting and entertaining program focused on jazz and blues, including songs from Brazil, Spain, France, US and UK sung in Portuguese, English, French, Spanish and English.

The Red Quartet’s self-titled album, produced by Philip Vaiman, is an evocative blend of European and South American traditions and sounds. Latin-jazz-classical ensemble features Marissa Steingold, vocals, Philip Vaiman, violin, Kenton Youngstrom, guitar, and Maksim Velichkin, cello.

The Red Quartet presents a departure from the usual string quartet lineup, offering the listeners reimagined adaptations of jazz favorites “Three Preludes” by George Gershwin; J.S. Professional career of The Red Quartet's violinist Philip Vaiman took him to concert halls around the globe and premier recording studios. He has also appeared on screen in such blockbusters as "The Wedding Planner", "Amy's O's", and "Spider-Man 3".

Philip Vaiman is a Russian-born violinist of international renown as a soloist and chamber performer. Beginning his musical training in Russia and having graduated Moscow’s Gnessin Music Lyceum, Vaiman then moved to the United States and graduated Cum Laude from USC’s Thornton School of Music. During this time, he performed throughout the United States, western and eastern Europe and Asia.
Vaiman’s recordings are featured on award-winning motion pictures, documentaries, animated films, and commercials. He has recorded for and performed with a diverse roster of artists including Aretha Franklin, Sting, Taylor Swift, Tony Bennett, Shakira, Dido, Goo Goo Dolls, Guns N’ Roses, Michael Jackson and Pearl Jam.

Today we are introducing Maksim Velichkin, Cellist & Pianist. Not only an excellent cellist, he is also an accomplished pianist, harpsichodist and an artist.

Cellist Maksim Velichkin has been active as a solo performer, and a chamber and orchestral collaborator in Southern California and throughout the world. A graduate of Duquesne University and USC, he has appeared as a soloist with Uzbekistan National Symphony, Duquesne Contemporary Ensemble, and the American Youth Symphony, as well as Torrance, Westchester, Southeast and Bellflower orchestras.

Velichkin has toured extensively to Europe, Asia, North and South America, and Australia with the prestigious Verbier Chamber and Verbier Festival Symphony Orchestras. His performances have been featured on Radio Swiss Romande, WQED-FM in Pittsburgh, and National Radio and Television of Uzbekistan.

Today we are introducing our amazing vocalist, Marissa Steingold

Marissa Steingold was born in Paris, France and grew up in Washington, D.C. A graduate of Princeton University, majoring in Musical Composition and Vocal Jazz Performance, New England Conservatory with Master’s in Vocal Jazz and Composition, and UCLA, with a PhD in Musicology, she has received numerous accolades including the Sachs Prize and the Downbeat Magazine Award. Ms. Steingold’s performances aired on PBS and NPR.

After moving to Los Angeles Marissa became a SAG vocalist for film, television and commercials. An impressively versatile performer and improviser, Ms. Steingold regularly records jazz, classical, klezmer, pop, R&B, middle -eastern, country, and rock. She is the “real” virtuosic voice of Teen Queen Hillary Duff in the film “Raise your voices” and has performed in numerous commercials, including Mercedes Benz, Motorola, Chevrolet and others. Marissa performs her quirky original music and lyrics in concerts and jazz clubs across the country and Europe.
She resides in Los Angeles, where she currently teaches at UCLA.

Today's spotlight is on our wonderful guitarist, Kenton Youngstrom

Kenton Youngstrom’s eclectic performing career has taken him around the world, including appearances as a soloist with orchestra, international tours with the Falla Guitar Trio (with Dusan Bogdanovic and Gyan Riley), concerts and recitals with jazz notables (pianists Taylor Eigsti and Dave Brubeck, flutist Hubert Laws, bassist Scott Colley and guitarist Larry Koonse), singing and performing on vihuela with his own Mexican conjunto, and playing with the Margo Rey rock group. (Nokia Theater [CA], Mahaffey Theater [FL]). Producing credits include the Falla Guitar Trio's Concord Records LP, Virtuoso Music for Three Guitars, which won a Record of the Year Award from Stereo Review magazine. Recent compositions include the score of Behind the Mask of Zorro (History Channel), Kengyadu - Three Movements for Guitar Trio and Orchestra (co-written with Gyan Riley and Dusan Bogdanovic) and Mary Pickford - A Life on Film (Milestone Films). Recent arrangements include Falla's Noches en los Jardines de España for the Falla Guitar Trio and orchestra, Corea's Children's Song No.6 for Quarteto Nuevo, Bach's Musical Offering for the Red Quartet, jazz selections for the Pasadena Jazz Orchestra and the movie 7 year ZigZag (Next Step Studios). He is on the faculty at the Colburn School of Performing Arts, Pepperdine University and Pasadena City College.
