A Kidderpore to Kalighat CTC tram pictured outside St Thomas's School on Diamond Harbour Road, Kidderpore in 2005. Pictured on flooded tram track, global warming and climate change will see more flooding in Kolkata in future years. Around the Sundarbans, the largest mangrove forest in the world is threatened by warming waters in the Bay of Bengal. Cyclones like Amphan may become the norm and if the Mangrove forests die, West Bengal and Bangladesh will loose an important 'buffer'. We can all help by using cleaner, non polluting forms of transport like trams, trains, e buses, bicycles and rickshaws. The United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) has released its 6th report. The news for Kolkata is not good as sea level rise could engulf the city by 2100 if climate action is delayed. The way we transport ourselves around Kolkata is important. The overuse of diesel powered cars, buses and autos not only creates toxic air pollution, but adds carbon into the atmosphere. Our main task as a community is to lobby the Government of West Bengal and WBTC to reopen closed tram routes, increase tram frequencies and employ more tram drivers and conductors. Solar, wind, green hydrogen and geothermal energy can power our trams, trains and buses into the future. The time for action is now and as the IPCC's 6th report clearly states, we only have 9 years to start making substantial changes by 2030.
