Happy lunar new year! 2021 is the year of the ox, usually regarded as the most reliable and steadfast of the zodiac animals.

WHAT'S COMING UP FOR YOU
CAREER: 2021 is going to be a year when your hard work will get rewarded. This year predicts new career opportunities, so don't let anxiety or negative thinking affect you.

LOVE: In the year of the metal ox (both reliable elements), relationships started tend to be durable and happy.

HEALTH: People born in the year of the Tiger or Monkey will be pretty lucky in the year of the ox! Most help problems will be minor, and will be easily addressed. Those in the sign of the dragon on the other hand might need to be careful in order to avoid burnout.

Blue Monday is over, but hump day is coming. If you're looking ideas for you self-care toolkit, here are our 7 ideas to try!

1. Light a candle
2. Journal/write a list- if you struggle with this, try setting a timer and freeflowing your thoughts till the timer runs out.
3. Read a book from your TBR pile.
4. Listen to your favourite music or podcast (like Culture Crossings! Episode 6 of CC is all about mental health- link in bio 😉😉)
5. Go for a walk (extra calming if you can find a furry friend to join you.)
6. Turn off your phone (and if you're brave, temporarily forget/reset your wifi password.)
7. Volunteer- it might not be the most obvious form of self care, but Maslow's third hierarchy of needs is "a sense of belonging and love" for a reason. Volunteering helps build a sense of community, which is a big contributor to the feeling of fulfillment.

What are some of your favourite ways to reset?

Happy holidays! December is a month for family and good food- what are some of your favourite holidays eats during the season?

Here are some of our own favourites!

“My everyday cooking is more of a fusion, but on New Year’s Eve I carry on my Japanese family’s custom. We have some toshikoshi soba to wish for everyone’s longevity. The sizzling hot tempura goes well with the noodles! I don’t know how to make soba from scratch yet, but one day I shall get there :) “- Asuka

"As a Filipino-Chinese, my holiday meals as a kid included both traditional Filipino Christmas dishes and whatever Chinese dishes that my aunts and uncles would feel like cooking for the day. We would have the Filipino Christmas ham - a ham glazed in pineapple juice for a sweet, tangy, fruity taste. Another Filipino Christmas staple we had was the queso de bola (literally, ball of cheese). While having a Spanish name, its roots actually come from the Dutch Edam cheese.

For our Chinese dishes, we’d have regional dishes originally from China’s Fujian province, which is where most Filipino-Chinese people come from. We’d have anything from siomai (pork dumplings), roasted duck, bihon (vermicelli noodles), or lumpia (spring roll, which has also become a mainstay of Filipino cuisine)."- Phoebe

Welcome to Culture Crossings

Culture Crossings is a podcast for transnational millennials hosted by Phoebe Yu and Asuka Ichikawa. We use the inclusive word “transnational” to refer to anyone with intercultural backgrounds, who continue moving around the world by choice or circumstance. We began this project to create a safe space to connect with each other as a unique community and express what it means to navigate life at the intersection of self, culture, and global mobility. We hope that our conversations can bring you some time to unwind and reflect, as well as some resource for your well-being.
