Our electric was out for 1.5 days this week- our worst nightmare.
We recently moved into our Walk-In freezer and haven't installed a good backup system yet so we were caught with our pants down!
It required moving our entire inventory to our freezer trailer (and back), but no meat was lost, Praise God!
I'm so thankful for Gareth Yoder who always has a plan B in mind. Meat was hustled this week, that's for sure!

This past weekend has been so good. Last week, we were slammed with Barley harvest, straw, hauling manure, and everything else that comes this time of year.
But on Friday, it rained, family came in, and we've been enjoying front porch sitting and taking walks around the farm with our girl.
I'm so blessed to be able to be able to work in an industry I love, bring Alyssa with me more than in a corporate setting, and share a REALLY GOOD end product with you guys.

Happy National Ag Day! Today is not about celebrating just us or our farm but the industry as a whole.
Did you know most of our cattle are born in Virginia and raised there the first year of their life on pasture? After that they make the journey north to us for a taste of grain.
It's so cool to see different regions of the U.S. utilize their strengths for a better food system. Virginia has an abundance of pasture and rolling hills but not much grain. On the other hand, PA has lots of grain and bi-products but also high real estate prices (hello land taxes 👋). It's the perfect place to finish cattle but simply not enough pasture for their initial days.
Together, the nation's food system is more efficient, economical, and resilient.

Are our cattle grass-finished? NOPE!
And we are proud of it.
We've been fine-tuning our feeding program since my grandpa began raising cattle in 1955 to ensure Quality, Consistency and Flavor.
We work with a nutritionist to dial in energy, protein, and even trace minerals. Then, we feed separate rations to cattle of different age groups for the best nutrional performance.
The result? Amazing BEEF.

I laugh now. I'm pretty sure I had the goal of selling 3 steers the first year we've started this business HA!
Truth is, this business continues to blow my mind with the possibilities. I never thought this would be a part time salary for me, I never thought we'd be working with some of the most knowledgeable chefs in the area, and I never thought we'd sell to .
🍁 But here we are!!! 🍁
It's just Liver, but its the coolest thing to see your brand and beef you raised in a community favorite grocery store.
I'm hoping they sell out fast and need more (theres plenty to go around 😅) so if you like Liver, go get it!
..and even if you don't, I'm sure your dog does 😉

🩺 Our vet came to visit today! Thankfully it was just our annual check-in and nothing actually serious.
🥼 It's so important to us to have a working relationship with our vet- he is a farm advisor, prescribes medications, and offers tips for better animal husbandry.
Fun Fact: we've been working with our vet for more than 30 years! He knows our farm well.

Does anybody else feel like August hit and all of a sudden it's fall?
Fall is in some ways a "final push" season for us as we round out the last freezer beef & pork spots and begin harvest.
It's a New Season though and with that comes New Opportunities. We will be moving cattle into the new barn soon and testing out new avenues in the Beef Biz. It's going to take a lot of mental energy and flexibility as we adjust to these new things, but we are up for the challenge.
To say we are excited for this new season is an understatement!

I specifically remember God saying "I will build this barn"
This project has been 2.5 years in the works and in the midst of permits, delays, and many conversations with the Big Man upstairs, everyone in our family wondered if this would actually happen.
Yet here we are, looking at a barn almost ready for cattle
Why did we decide to go with a barn of this size?
🔹️The high roof allows for better airflow and cattle health
🔹️Seperatef pens will allow us to feed different rations tailored to different age groups of cattle
🔹️Safer working facilities for both the cattle and us!
All of these simple benefits will lead to increased efficiency and keep our business viable for the future.
