Strange Fruit was written by Abel Meeropol in protest of the horrors of lynching. It was made famous through Billie Holiday's gripping recording made in 1939. With the current state of affairs, and the death of African Americans at the hands of some police officers who have violated their oath to serve and protect, I find this song to still be of painful relevance today.
I present this excerpt of Strange Fruit on Violin and Piano in memory of all the victims of such horrific, deadly acts; the ones we know of, and the ones we don't. I also present these potent words written by Abel Meeropol as a reminder to the ones who still have not fully grasped the ramifications of such brutality, not only on the Black community, but on our decency as a human race.

Bintilshalabiyya/Shaneh; a shared musical heritage:
Here you go; my first acapella project in collaboration with the amazing Nariman Assadi on Tombak! In this video, we are playing a song that is popular in both the Arab world and Iran. After doing more research, I discovered that it is popular in other countries as well. In the end of the video I compile excerpts of the same song recorded in different countries of the Middle/ Near East. Seems this song is more popular than I thought. I hope you find this video enjoyable and informative. Enjoy!

Tomorrow is the first day of Ramadan. Ramadan Kareem to you all. May we become a better version of ourselves during this holy month. I have made a Wahawy ya Wahawy video for all of you! and while we're at it provided some musical analysis of the piece to those working on this type of thing. If you are not a musician, don't you worry about all this musical jargon, just listen and enjoy this piece from me to you. ๐๐ป
If you are a maqam enthusiast, I invite you to participate in a discussion about modulation in Arabic music. When do we know that we've modulated to a different maqam family and when do we know that we are merely exploring the different ajnas within the same family? Sami Abu Shumays, Johnny Farraj, I've read your wonderful book in which you do talk about this. I'd be curious to know your view along with everyone else's regarding this particular passage in question at min 2:00 of this video.
To everyone joining the conversation, it may be more useful to the world if you post your musical thoughts in the YouTube comments. This way, a larger amount of people can benefit from the discussion, not only my immediate circle of friends and followers. Feel free to tag fellow maqam lovers who would be interested in sharing their views on the topic.
Thank you for everyone's contribution to the discussion. May we always learn from one another. Ramadan Kareem!

It was a pleasure participating in this project put together by the innovative Iranian choreographer Aisan Hoss and Dancers . It reflects memories of Nowruz (Persian New Year) and feelings of celebrating Nowruz during the difficult times of the Muslim ban and the covid-19 pandemic.

Today is Mother's Day in Egypt. Happy Mothers Day to all the Egyptian mothers out there. Happy mother's day to my dear Mama Sahar Kabeil. My Mama has been the corner stone of our family. She has been the source of light, joy and lots of laughter. She taught me how to be creative and think out of the box when I was a little girl. She taught me to respect the Arts and grow up in the field myself. She supported me on the long, and difficult, but rewarding journey of becoming a musician since my first violin lesson at 4 years old till this very day. Thank you Mama for everything. Children grow up with their parents singing them lullabies, but this Mother's Day, I've composed a lullaby for my Mama called "I Remember". This lullaby is one without words. It's in the language I know best; Music.
I remember everything you've done for us and everything you've sacrificed for us my dear Mama and I always will.

I Remember: A lullaby by Basma Edrees Composition: Basma Edrees Violin: Basma Edrees
Contemplating on the coronavirus situation with my violin and keyboard and how it's impacted the lives of many musicians. Here is a product of my contemplation. My thoughts and prayers go out to the victims of this parasite.
Grab your tickets for this year's What Do the Women Say? โ Power, Privilege, and Agency. We're proud to feature Nuance, collaboratively created by Egyptian violinist, Basma Edrees and Iranian dancer, Aisan Hoss.
goldenthread.org/tickets for the event on March 8!
*** Nuance incorporates Basma and Aisan's immigration experience coming to the US from their respective countries; Egypt and Iran. The piece incorporates Egyptian and Iranian influences portraying their roots, as well as contemporary and western classical influences portraying their artistic training in the US. Artistically, they are both: Eastern and Western, but does society allow you to be both or does it seek to put you in a categorical box that is simpler than the nuanced reality of the human experience? This piece seeks to dwell upon the struggles that come along with immigrating to a new land, the questions surrounding identity, leaving all that one knows, and the courage needed to face the new. These ideas are brought together and illustrated in Nuance through music and dance.
